There's a lot going on at Simmons, in the surrounding Fenway neighborhood,
and beyond — Boston is an exciting city. Simmons students balance
the rigors of academic study with an active social calendar. What’s
hot about Boston? The nightlife, Newbury Street, Red Sox games, music,
parks, history, amazing arts-and-culture institutions — and more
than 300,000 other college students.
Here’s a glimpse of social happenings at Simmons and nearby:
Go Sharks!
We like to boast about sports at Simmons. Our jocks rock! At Simmons,
women athletes are it, unlike coeducational institutions where women’s
teams often take the back seat to other programs. You can attend Simmons
Division III games throughout the year —choose from basketball,
crew, field hockey, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, and
volleyball.
Culture Shock
An annual showcase of food, fashion, and performance from all over
the world. The International Multicultural Association and other Simmons
student organizations sponsor this wild event in collaboration with
the Colleges of the Fenway. Tickets always sell out.
The Club Scene
Lansdowne Street is where students from the 15 neighboring colleges
hit the dance floor and make new acquaintances: cafes, pool halls, and
clubs with techno, hip-hop, rock, punk, reggae, salsa, ballroom, and
more! All just a short walk from the Simmons residence campus.
Have a Field Day
Start training for the Simmons Cup. Relay races, scavenger hunts, and
volleyball have replaced the javelin throw and horseback events of past
field days. MIT fraternities team up with Simmons residence halls to
compete for the cup.
Root for the Home Team
Boston boasts world class sports teams, including the Boston Red Sox,
the Boston Celtics, the New England Patriots, the Boston Bruins, the
New England Revolution, and the Boston Breakers. Each spring, the Boston
Marathon draws thousands of world-class runners to the city. In
the fall, Boston hosts the nation’s top crew teams at the Head
of the Charles Regatta. Purchase tickets to sporting events through
the Student Information Desk.
Catch a Flick
A brand new 13-screen cineplex is a two-minute walk from Simmons residence
campus. If the Landmark isn’t showing your movie, check out more
than 20 other theaters in the Boston area. Students can purchase discounted
tickets to local theaters, or get student discounts at the door. Free
movie screenings also happen at Simmons throughout the semester, including
the Luna Fest, a showcase of women filmmakers.
Hello, Mr. Simmons!
Male beauty pageant? You bet. The annual Mr. Simmons Contest will make
you laugh until you cry. Each student residence hall and organization
enters a contestant. Contestants demonstrate a talent, model swimsuits,
and answer questions from a panel of judges. Proceeds go to charity.
