Application Process

Simmons employs a multi-step process in order to become an RA. Below is an outline of each step in the process:

Info Sessions

Info sessions are required in order to submit an application to be an RA. At an info session, you will have a chance to hear from current RAs and Professional Staff about the responsibilities and day-to-day activities that are involved in being an RA. This is also a great opportunity for you to be able to ask any questions before you decide whether or not you’d like to apply. At your info session, you will receive a link to the application and a list of important dates and information for the rest of the process.

You will receive a link to the RA application at your info session. The RA application has multiple parts. Candidates will be asked to submit a resume. If you have never completed a resume before, we recommend visiting the Career Education Center for assistance. Additionally, the application asks for all candidates to name two professional references, one of which must be a faculty or staff member at Simmons. Faculty and staff may include the following: professors, advisors, deans, employees of other college departments (such as OSLA or VPEO), Residence Life Professional Staff, and current RAs. RAs are the only student employees that are allowed to complete references. Candidates are also required to complete a few short essays. Please place a lot of critical thought into your responses!

Staff Meet and Greet

Meet and Greet is an opportunity for all new RA candidates to meet the current Residence Life Staff, including RAs and Professional Staff. It is another chance for you to be able to ask questions about different aspects of the job, and it is also the first chance for you to make an in-person impression with current RAs and ProStaff.

Group Process

Group Process is a chance for candidates’ leadership skills to be evaluated in a variety of settings. Candidates will be split into teams and asked to complete a variety of tasks.

Individual Interviews

Individual interviews are half-hour blocks in which a current RA and ProStaff member will ask you a variety of questions to gauge your readiness to take on different aspects of the RA position.
