Palliative Care Social Work Fellowship

Job Description

A postgraduate Clinical Social Work Fellowship in Palliative Care is offered through the Transitions and Life Choices program of the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview. The fellowship is a training program that is part of a set of comprehensive palliative care clinical services and interdisciplinary professional training services. Supervised clinical social work experience will be provided on an inpatient interdisciplinary consultation service and in an outpatient palliative care clinic. Additional rotations are available based on the fellow’s experience and areas of professional interest. The fellow will participate in palliative care team rounds and case discussions, teaching rounds, journal club, palliative care trainings, and department planning meetings. This program is designed to train leaders in palliative care clinical social work, with an emphasis on advocacy.
The fellowship is fulltime for a period of nine months. The second cycle begins in September, 2009, and ends in May, 2010. In addition to providing clinical services in both inpatient and outpatient settings, it is expected that the fellow will choose and develop a clinical project. The fellow is also expected to research and provide some training within the medical center on one or more palliative care related topics of interest to the fellow.
Training in clinical hypnosis will be provided to the fellow in early June through attendance at the annual training sponsored by the Minnesota Society of Clinical Hypnosis (prior to the start of the fellowship) if the fellow is able to attend. Clinical supervision in the fellowship will then include supervision of clinical hypnosis skill development.

Affiliations: The Palliative Care Social Work Fellowship Program at the University of Minnesota Medical Center has affiliations with both the University of Minnesota School of Social Work and the University of Minnesota Center for Bioethics. The University of Minnesota School of Social Work will provide an opportunity for the fellow to receive mentoring and consultation from a faculty member, as well as experience in supervising a small number of MSW students in learning research applications and working on the fellow’s chosen clinical project. The University of Minnesota Center for Bioethics is engaged in research and teaching in bioethics, including a clinical bioethics course. The Center also houses an ethics consultation service, which will provide opportunities for the fellow’s involvement and learning. Specific involvement and activities with both the School of Social Work and the Center for Bioethics will be tailored to the specific needs and interests of the fellow.

Requirements/Qualifications

Eligibility: To be eligible for the fellowship the applicant must have a Masters in Social Work degree from an accredited school of social work. The applicant must demonstrate interest in the area of palliative care and an intent to use the fellowship training not only to increase her/his skills in clinical social work in the area of palliative care but also to contribute to the field and improve services to patients and their families. The fellow must be licensed to practice social work in the state of Minnesota (at the LGSW, LISW, or LICSW level) before the start of the fellowship.

POST-MSW INTERNSHIP IN CLINICAL SOCIAL WORK

The Tang Health Center is the home base for CPS and SOS, which serves a diverse, urban campus of more than 31,000 undergraduates and graduate students. Following are the fellowships available for the 2009 – 20010 academic year. 

Department of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry offers full time fellowships providing a solid, broad-base training opportunity in child and adolescent mental health.  The fellowships offer intensive supervision by senior staff as well as participation in numerous social work and multidisciplinary trainings and seminars.  Each fellowship consists of dividing time between Outpatient Psychiatry and The Swensrud Depression Prevention Initiative for Children.  In Outpatient Psychiatry, diagnostic evaluations and psychotherapy with children and adolescents ages 3-18, parents, families, and groups form the core of the fellowship.  The fellow’s outpatient clinical work will be at Children's Hospital.  The Swensrud Initiative specifically targets prevention in the area of childhood depression.  Fellows will learn and practice established individual, group, family, and school prevention strategies.  The site for these prevention efforts will be at the Boston Public Schools.  Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the development of new prevention interventions and outcome research.  The fellow’s time will be divided equally between Outpatient work and The Swensrud Depression Initiative.  Fellows receive four weeks vacation, to be taken at the mutual convenience of the fellow and the supervisor.  The fellowships run from September through August.
There is a stipend of $26,000 plus benefits. 

Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH)

The fellowship in the Division of Adolescent Medicine offers advanced training in clinical practice, teaching and research under a federal grant for Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH).  The Division of Adolescent Medicine is a primary care medical clinic, which serves adolescents and young adults from the Boston area as well as offering special services for eating disorders, HIV and at-risk youth.  The fellow is responsible for mental health assessment, consultation, crisis intervention and treatment, and will also receive training and experience in the evaluation and treatment of eating disorders.  The fellow functions as part of a multi-disciplinary team and is responsible for consultation with medical providers and teaching of medical residents.  There are two hours per week of individual supervision.  The fellow attends numerous seminars with other multidisciplinary LEAH fellows in the areas of teaching, epidemiology and statistics, research, cultural competency, adolescent development, community advocacy and outreach, nursing and mental health.  She/he will attend a monthly lecture series in issues pertaining to adolescent health and mental health and learn to present and critique a research article.  This full-time fellowship runs from September through August and stipend is $30,000 plus benefits.

Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities  (LEND)

This is an opportunity for a Social Work Fellow to Develop Leadership Skills and Learn about Developmental Disabilities. The Leadership Education in Neuro-Developmental Disabilities (LEND) program at Children’s Hospital provides interdisciplinary leadership education (didactic and clinical) preparing leaders in an emerging health care system, to improve the health of infants, children, and adolescents who have or are at risk for developing neurodevelopment and related disabilities. This program requires 1-½ days per week, with Friday as a mandatory day.  

Highlights of the LEND program

*Participation in a 3 day policy/advocacy conference in Washington DC that includes legislative reception and opportunity to advocate directly on Capital Hill.
*Opportunity to work clinically with families (both in the hospital and in the community) who have children with special health care needs, LICSW supervision provided.
*Participation on Children’s Hospital interdisciplinary comprehensive evaluation team.
*Direct in-home experience with a family whose child has a developmental disability through the Linking Hands program at Children’s Hospital.
*Didactic seminars on leadership, state of the art evidence based practices across disciplines, interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural awareness, public health perspectives, conflict resolution, and policies and approaches from a systems perspective.
*Opportunity for ongoing work with community based minority organization.

There is a $4,000 stipend with no benefits.


Pediatric Palliative Care Fellowship (Offered in Collaboration with the Smith College End-of-Life Care Post MSW Certificate Program)

The Pediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT), the pediatric palliative care service at Children’s Hospital Boston and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, is offering a 32 hours per week, September, 2009 through May 20010 social work fellowship. PACT is a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to improving symptoms and quality of life in children with advanced illness.  The team includes physicians, nurses, chaplains, communication specialists, psychologists, child life specialists, social workers, etc.  The fellow will have the opportunity to work with patients and their families as well as develop and lead groups.  There will be opportunities to gain knowledge and experience with related community resources, hospice and bereavement services.  PACT provides patient care inpatient, outpatient and in the community.   The fellow functions as part of a multi-disciplinary team and is responsible for consultation with other medical providers. 
Fellows receive two hours of supervision per week.  The fellow will have the opportunity to attend PACT educational rounds featuring multi-disciplinary experts in the field of Pediatric Palliative Care, as well as other seminars offered at both Children’s Hospital Boston and Dana Farber Cancer Institute.  There are also weekly PACT clinical rounds at which time the core team is able to plan and reflect with the larger team about patient care. All social work fellows at Children’s Hospital participate in didactic seminars and a fellows discussion group.

This is an opportunity to work with one of the first pediatric palliative care team in the country.  There is a stipend of $15,600 for the 9 month fellowship and includes 3 weeks vacation (9 days total).

Social Work Fellowship Program Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:  How many Social Workers apply to the program?  How many are accepted?
A:  We typically receive between 30 and 50 applications with space for 2 fellows in Psychiatry, and 1 fellow in each of the other departments.

Q:  Would I have an opportunity to meet with a staff person at some time during the application process?
A:  After reviewing the applications, Elizabeth Wharff, PhD, LICSW (director of the training program), and other senior Social Workers interview selected applicants.

Q:  When are the decisions made?
A: Usually, within a month of the application deadline.  All applicants will be notified either way.

Q:  Do I need my Mass social work licensure before I apply?
A:  Fellows should have their Mass licensure (LICSW or LCSW) by September of the year they start the fellowship.  You do not need to have the licensure to apply.

Q: Am I eligible to receive health benefits?
A: All fellows except LEND are eligible to receive benefits at an additional cost.

Q: What days are the LEND fellowship?
A: All day Friday starting at 8:00am is required.  Other time can be negotiated.

Q:  What days are the PACT fellowship?
A:  All day Thursday, at least a half day on Friday, and one full day early in the week.  Otherwise, days/times can be negotiated to make the total 32 hours.

Q: How do I get paid?  Is my stipend taxed?
A:  You will be paid as a monthly employee with taxes taken out.  Except LEND, which is paid monthly, with NO taxes taken out.

Q: What should I write about in my two page letter?
A: You should include those aspects that led you to apply for this Fellowship.  State what you hope to learn, how you learn most readily, whether you have special interests you would like to develop, and how you think this advanced training might help you realize future goals.

Q: How should I submit my application materials?
A:  Materials should all be emailed except the transcripts which should be mailed.  However, all mailed or faxed materials will be accepted.  All materials if sent separately will be collated together and you will be notified if anything is missing.
