Simmons Social Work Professor Hugo Kamya works to heal youth who have faced trauma in war and post-war Africa. Kamya, who teaches "Human Services in Developing Countries: Uganda," and courses in clinical practice, trauma, and narrative therapies, treats children who have been both the target and perpetrator of brutality.

Associate Professor of Practice , Dana Grossman Leeman was recently appointed to the Executive Committee of AASWG International as Symposia Co-Chair with Dr. Dominique Moyse Steinberg. She participated in reviewing manuscripts and abstracts for both the symposium and for symposium proceedings. She also has three book reviews that will be printed in future issues of Social Work with Groups, due out in Fall 2011 and Winter 2012.

Associate Professor Peter Maramaldi received funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to serve as a co-investigator for the study "Oral Cancer Screening Detection Methods in a Community Setting." Maramaldi also had a peer reviewed manuscript published in Annals of Behavioral Medicine, titled " A Randomized Trial Comparing the Effect of Two Phone-Based Interventions on Colorectal Cancer Screening Adherence."

Dr. Beverly C. Sealey was invited to participate in the 2011 training for Site Visitors for the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), to become a site visitor. The CSWE is the accreditation body that accredits schools of social work, and the site team visits and reviews a school application either for accreditation or re-accreditation. Dr. Sealey will be attending the trainings at the upcoming Annual Program Meeting, to be held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Assistant Professor Tien Ung currently works with community organizations within the Asian, Haitian, and African Diaspora. One of her current studies aims to examine the effects of ethnic and race and linguistic case matching on practitioner well-being and explore implications such effects may have on social work practice. Findings from this study will have significant implications for and help to inform best practices relative to organizational cultural responsiveness, cross cultural intervention, and workplace safety.

The current project examines radicalization and trauma and it is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This is an extension of a prior research on "Caring Across Communities: School based Trauma Systems Therapy for Somali Adolescent Refugees.

Associate Professor of Practice Dawn Belkin Martinez's book proposal was accepted for publication by Routledge Publishing. The book is titled Social Justice in Clinical Practice: A Liberation Health Framework for Social Work. It will be the first book published in English that applies the liberation health conceptual framework to clinical practice.
