Master of Social Work
- Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, achieving at least a B (3.0) average; it is desirable that applicants have a balanced liberal arts education on the undergraduate level.
- Relevant experience through summer employment, volunteer work during/after college, and/or full-time employment in the human services field after college graduation is required.
- Applicants must show a commitment to social work values and personal qualifications for social work, evidenced in the applicant's Statement of Professional and Educational Intent, and the applicant's letters of recommendation.
- No standardized test scores are required.
- An interview is not required; however under certain circumstances we may require an interview with the Director of Admission after application review.
- Although an interview is not required, informational visits and/or informational conversations via telephone are welcomed and can be arranged by calling 617-521-3939.
- No course credit is given for life or work experience.
Ph.D. in Social Work
- Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, with an appropriate distribution of liberal arts courses.
- In addition, they must hold a master's degree from a program in social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
- Miller Analogies Test scores within the past five years are required.
- TOEFL, is required if English is not the first language.
- Applicants must interview with a member of the Doctoral Committee after a favorable review of admission materials.
Course Requirements
Statistics
The school requires that students have received a minimum grade of "B" in an introductory statistics course within five years prior to entering the master's program. SSW offers statistics courses in the spring and summer for entering students who need to complete this requirement. Accepted students may also enroll in a basic statistics course at any accredited college or university. There are no exceptions to this policy.
Writing Skills for Social Workers
This course may be required as a preregistration condition for some students. It teaches some of the basic skills necessary for written work at Simmons including such issues as; writing a literature review, organizational skills in writing, using the APA format and other skills useful for entry into the program. If this course is required, satisfactory completion is necessary prior to matriculation.
Mandatory Health Insurance
Effective September 1, 1989, all full-time and three-fourths time students enrolled in a Massachusetts institution of higher education are required to be covered by health insurance for the 12 months following September 1, or from the date of enrollment, if after September 1, until August 31 of each year enrolled. The insurance coverage must meet minimum requirements as defined by the state as Qualifying Student Health Insurance Plan (QSHIP). All colleges offer insurance that students must purchase unless they waive participation by demonstrating that they have comparable coverage.
