The Simmons School of Social work, in conjunction with the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), offers a dual degree program leading to a Master of Science in Social Work (66 credit MSW program) and Master of Science in Society, Human Development, and Health with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health, (HSPH 42.5 credit program).
This professional dual degree program, which requires that 57 credits be earned at Simmons and 42.5 at HSPH, is designed to prepare professional social workers for clinical practice, advanced research, program design and policy positions in public and private agencies and institutions serving children and their families. More specifically, graduates are trained to take an epidemiological approach to identifying problems affecting health status and social functioning of children and their families, develop interventions at the level of primary prevention, promote positive health behaviors, and demonstrate the association between specific social factors and the incidence of health problems.
Applicants should have a relevant bachelor's degree and the equivalent of at least three years of related experience. International applicants are eligible to apply. Applicants must meet the general admission requirements and be accepted for matriculation at both the Simmons School of Social Work and HSPH.
The three year program requires students to enroll in half time study at both HSPH and Simmons for two academic years in addition to meeting the course and field work requirements for the MSW degree. Students may use two HSPH courses as social work electives, and one HSPH research course to meet the requirement for one social work research courses, for a total of 9 of the required 65 credits for the MSW degree being earned at the HSPH. See the Simmons course requirements and the Harvard School of Public Health, Department of Society, Human Development and Health, Curriculum Advisory Guide for degree requirements. Continued matriculation is dependent upon maintaining satisfactory academic progress in both programs.
