M.S.W. Extended Program

M.S.W. Extended Program

Simmons offers an extended program option designed for students who have employment, family, or other responsibilities that prevent them from attending class on a full-time basis. To provide  more flexibility, we offer all required first-year courses during evening and daytime blocks, as well as some summer and Saturday classes. Most students complete the extended program in three years. CSWE standards require that students earn the degree within four years.

Classes

First year courses are offered Wednesdays and Fridays. Most extended program students take three classes each semester the first year. Classes meet for two-hour time blocks, once a week. During the second and third years, students usually take two classes each semester while in their internships. However, summer classes may allow students to reduce their course load during the time of their internships.

Internships

During the second and third years of the program, internships must be completed during daytime hours (coursework can be day or evening). Internships are three days a week (24 hours) both years. Some extended program students stretch the program to four years, interning during the second and fourth years.

Internships at current human service jobs:  If you are currently working in a human service agency that allows you to do "social work" internships under an M.S.W. supervisor, you may request a "job placement" for the first internship. Application forms are available from the Field Education Department by calling (617) 521-3943.
