Record Number of Recruiters at School of Social Work Career Fair

On March 5th, thirty-two employers attended the School of Social Work Career Fair to recruit students and recent alumni for social work positions. The list of participating employers included a wide variety of organizations, including some of the largest employers of social workers in the state: The Home for Little Wanderers, Boston Children's Hospital, North Suffolk Mental Health Center, Vinfen Corporation, Advocates, Inc. Bay Cove Human Services, Health Leads, and South Shore Mental Health.

This enthusiastic response from employers, an increase in the total number from 2012, is likely to reflect the healthy state of the job market for social workers. The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 25% increase in all social work positions over the next decade, faster than the average for most other occupations (14%). The projected growth rate is even stronger for the health (34%) and behavioral health sectors (31%) in social work.

Many students left the fair with solid job leads and plans for job interviews, underscoring again that Simmons School of Social Work graduates are in high demand. "Each year the results of our annual employment survey demonstrate that many students are recruited to their first social work job through connections they make at the Career Fair," stated Assistant Dean Suzanne Sankar, M.S.W.

The Career Fair is an annual event sponsored jointly by the Career Education Center and the School of Social Work. It is one of several career events offered during the year. Other events include the alumni panel, job search strategy workshops and licensing workshops.

The school also maintains a social work job board with current postings from area and national employers.
