Phyllis Fonseca, M.S.W., LICSW
Phyllis Fonseca joined the full-time faculty at SSW in 2005 as an assistant professor in the Field Department responsible for coordination of the Extended Program. She also served as a field placement advisor and taught the Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) to new field placement supervisors. In 2011 she became the founding coordinator of the Academic Services Center (ASK). Also in 2011 Ms. Fonseca was designated an associate professor of clinical practice. Starting in the fall of 2012 she joined the adjunct faculty as a field advisor.
Ms. Fonseca earned her M.S.W. from the Smith College School for Social Work in 1988. In her early years as a professional social worker she worked with adolescents in community-based forensic and community service settings and with perinatal women in community health centers, (Roxbury District Court; Roxbury Youthworks, Inc.; Dimock Community Health Center; and City Year). She honed her skills in college-based counseling while working for eleven years in Counseling & Health Services at Salem State College. There she served as an administrator, clinician and field educator, training numerous interns and post-doctoral trainees from across disciplines. Ms. Fonseca has returned to college counseling part-time providing direct services and training master and doctoral social work and psychology interns. She is especially interested in young adult development, mood disorders and working with women of color.
