Carol Swenson, M.S.W., D.S.W.

Carol Swenson is a professor emerita, having retired from the full-time faculty in 2004. She continues to teach in the doctoral program focusing on writing for professional publication and presenting at conferences. She has her M.S.W. from Smith College School of Social Work and her doctorate from Columbia University, where she studied with Carel Germain and Alex Gitterman, who were primary developers of the ecological perspective and the life model of practice. She practiced primarily in community mental health and health care settings, including as chief social worker in psychiatry at Cambridge Hospital. She was chair of the Clinical Practice Sequence for almost 20 years, and was Director of the Doctoral Program. Her teaching, writing and practice interests include clinical practice, qualitative research, social justice, ideas of the self and community, and spirituality. She has published in many journals, and has served as a reviewer for Social Work, Families in Society, and Arete journals.
