Survey: Businesswomen are Lukewarm on the Effectiveness of Women's Networks at Work

BOSTON (March 29, 2012) — Bucking the notion that the establishment of a women's network at work is a key strategy to advancing women in organizations, a new survey finds that many businesswomen have a lukewarm opinion about the ability of these groups to promote their careers. In a study conducted at the 2011 Simmons College Leadership Conference with a lead conference sponsor HP, women said they believe the efficacy of a women's network at work is only as strong as a company's investment in the group and the depth of its connection with the overall organizational strategy. Specifically, the study found that women believe these networks were of particular value when they provided skill-building opportunities (training, mentoring, coaching) and visibility (exposure to senior management.)

Simmons entrepreneur starts nonprofit to educate disabled children in Africa

Non-profit management and entrepreneurship MBA student Obiageli Ukadike recognized a serious education gap in Ghana, Africa. People with physical disabilities are often shunned from mainstream society and denied access to quality education. To combat this injustice, Oby co-founded The WaWa Project, a non-profit organization aimed at providing education to physically disabled children in Ghana. The WaWa Project plans to raise approximately $2.5 million over the next five years to build a handicap accessible secondary school for children grades six through twelve. The non-profit will build the school, hire local staff and administrators and create education plans to teach students skills they can use post graduation. Oby is ecstatic about the attention her cause has received.

Simmons College to Host International Women Fulbright Scholars for Leadership and Strategy Training

More than 35 international women Fulbright Scholars will descend on the campus of Simmons College, beginning March 7, for a three-day strategy and leadership caucus, as part of the distinguished 2012 Fulbright Leadership and Re-entry Seminar for Women from the Western Hemisphere. The scholars, who are mostly from Central and South America, have been in the United States for up to two years, researching subjects ranging from ocean engineering, to accounting and finance, to agriculture. At Simmons, the women will develop specific action plans as they prepare to re-adjust to their home countries and cultures, to help them fully realize the depth of their scholarly experiences in the United States and map their next steps as scholarly leaders.

Simmons Student Featured as "MBA All-Star" in Boston Business Journal

BOSTON (October 7, 2011) — Simmons School of Management Student Obiageli Ukadike was featured in the Boston Business Journal as an "MBA All-Star," October 7. Ukadike discussed her "lifelong goal of helping people" through her work to build and run vocational boarding schools for teens with disabilities in Ghana. She also spoke about her Simmons education, saying it's "propelling me in places where I really needed to be."

Simmons School of Management Named One of Top 20 Socially Responsible MBA Programs in the World

BOSTON (September 26, 2011) — The Simmons College School of Management has been ranked in the top 20 in the 2011 "Beyond Grey Pinstripes" ranking by the Aspen Institute Center for Business Education. Simmons is the only school in Massachusetts, and one of only two schools in New England to make the top-20 list. This is the second time since 2009 that Simmons College has been ranked in the top 20 in this biennial survey.

A recognized business and financial expert who led the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston for 13 years as President and CEO, Cathy E.
