Blogger Posts "Thoughts on the Simmons College Women's Leadership Conference"
"This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending (for the first time) the 30th Simmons School of
Management Women’s Leadership Conference in Boston at the beautiful Seaport World Trade Center. It was
a beautiful day in Boston, and driving in to the conference, I didn’t know what to expect. These things
can either go very well, or well – not. From the beginning of the conference, when Joyce Kolligian
kicked things off with her opening remarks, I got the feeling that I was in for a treat."

Simmons School of Management Survey Findings Featured in CNN Article
LONDON, England (CNN) -- Even in an era in which gender equality within business corporations is an
officially-acknowledged -- if by no means fully realized -- idea, it seems there are some supposed
distinctions between the sexes which are still ok to make. One business school, however, begs to differ. New
research by the Simmons School of Management, based in Boston, Massachusetts, contends that not only do
female managers take more risks than believed, but that they should also more actively seek out credit for
their boldness. For the complete CGO article, "Risky Business: Busting the Myth of Women as Risk Averse,"

Women Business Leaders are Risk-Takers: Survey Debunks Gender Myth
BOSTON (April 28, 2009) - Contrary to popular belief, women business leaders don't shy from taking risks,
but partake in opportunities considered to be "high-risk" on a regular basis, according to a survey by the
Simmons School of Management in Boston. Existing empirical research on gender and risk suggest women are
risk-averse, particularly assessments that measure risk through financial resource allocation, and health and
safety precautions. But a survey of more than 650 women managers polled during the 2008 Simmons School of
Management national leadership conference in Boston revealed that businesswomen are highly likely to take
risks related to business or professional opportunities.

Professor Jill Avery's research on "gender-bending" in brands is referenced in the Economist
Professor Jill Avery's research on "gender-bending" in brands was quoted in the Economist article "Hello,
girls." The article states: "Jill Avery of the Simmons School of Management in Boston researched this trend
[gender-bending] with cars. When Porsche released a sport-utility vehicle designed for women, sales
temporarily increased, but men started to move away from the brand, on the basis that it had compromised its
masculine image. But in this recession, having a tarnished brand is better than having no brand at
all."

Professor Jill Avery Quoted in Advertising Age
Professor Jill Avery was quoted in the Advertising Age article "Gender-Bending Brands an Easy Way to
Increase Product Reach." In the article Professor Avery states: "When most companies look at this strategy,
they see the short-term gain, marketers have to be really aware of the ways in which consumers use their
brands…Some brands we don't use as much for identity, but certain ones we use to enact our gender --
to be a woman or be a man -- so that's where gender-bending becomes particularly dangerous." "In the current
economy, I think people are going to be going after those short-term gains more and more."
