National Gates Arrest Review Committee Features Simmons School of Management Professor
BOSTON (September 18, 2009) — Stacy Blake-Beard, a professor at the Simmons School of Management,
has been appointed to the 12-member Cambridge Review Committee, a national independent group that aims to
identify lessons learned from the July 16 arrest of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Blake-Beard, who
specializes in organizational behavior, diversity and mentoring, joins a distinguished body of academic and
law enforcement representatives to address a range of issues surrounding the controversial incident that made
international headlines. Among the committee's goals are to assess whether the Cambridge Police department
should modify its operational procedures; how issues of race, class, and interpersonal conflict should be
included in officers' training; and what should be done to better appreciate the cultural and social
complexities of the residents who deal with police.

Female Political Role Models Inspire, But Girls Lukewarm on Running for Office
Professor Mary Shapiro is quoted in a Market Watch article examining a student political opinion poll
conducted by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools. The coalition surveyed 1,600 girls from across
the country on their views on the 2008 election and their level of interest in running for office. Simmons
School of Management Professor, Mary Shapiro says: "This is a generation which has grown up with
multi-culturalism, not just as a media created concept, but as a reality. Seeing a woman run for political
office may be seen as 'normal' given the number of strong role models these girls have."

Women's Network Roundtable with Dr. Stacy Blake-Beard
More than 70 women gathered for a Women’s Network Roundtable at the UMass Club. The session,
entitled “Networking for Results,” was facilitated by Dr. Stacy Blake-Beard, associate professor
at the Simmons School of Management. All participants created a network map in order to analyze their network
and help work their way towards a specific goal. Dr. Blake-Beard walked the group through their maps to
determine where they had gaps, and shared useful tips and strategies to fill those gaps and achieve their
goals. She also dispelled myths about traditional networking and taught participants how to make the most of
their networking opportunities.

Competition For Women Entrepreneurs Awards Simmons School of Management Graduate $15,000 For Fair Trade Apparel Company
BOSTON (Oct. 22, 2008) – A recent MBA graduate creating her own fair-trade women's apparel company
won more than $15,000 in prize money and in-kind business service awards during the third annual Silverman
Business Plan Competition held this month at the Simmons School of Management, the leading business school in
the U.S. specifically designed for women.

Simmons spinout sees a charger in every garage
A Simmons College spinout is looking a few years down the line to give a jump-start to the car of the
future. Simmons School of Management graduate student and entrepreneur Jennifer Morris has launched LocalWatt
LLC, which plans to market a “charging station” for hybrid and electric cars to parking garages
and parking lots, for drivers to “gas” up while their cars are parked.
