"Parental Guidance" Wall Street Journal article looks at need for MBA schools to extend support to moms
The Wall Street Journal discusses the need for support and outreach efforts for mothers in business schools in the September 20 article, “Parental Guidance.” While MBA moms are still a small minority in the MBA classroom, each year the percentages increase. The article added, “Catering to mothers could just be the answer to the perennial problem of attracting more women to MBA programs.” Additionally, the article stated that, “A survey taken by the Graduate Management Admission Council found that women were significantly more likely than men to be concerned that an MBA program would force them to postpone marriage, children or other personal plans.”
Simmons School of Management has taken great strides to offer a flexible program schedule to all women. Simmons’ daytime track has all classes between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. “We’re not calling it a ‘mommy track,’ but it does allow women to attend class while their children are in school or day care,” says Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands.
