The May 2 Microsoft Momentum article “Getting a Grip” explores midsize companies’ biggest financial challenge: managing expenses. Many companies are looking at how to improve the management of indirect expenses, from business travel to office supplies. One barrier that companies face is difficulty “gathering, analyzing and using” data about managing their expenses. Simmons SOM’s Indra Guertler, associate professor of finance, said, “Your accountant needs to be able to communicate this information to you in a way you can understand and act on.” Guertler suggests using an enterprise resource planning (ERP) software that can collect, categorize, analyze and report on various aspects of the budget. Doing so allows a company to track every aspect of financial operations, which in turn provides the foundation for strategic decision making.
