Dean Merrill-Sands quoted in Fortune on women in business

The May 29 issue of Fortune “Women in Business” article asked: Why are there so few women in corporate leadership? Simmons SOM Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands offered her point of view on how to solve the problem. “Companies on the cutting-edge do a portfolio analysis of the opportunities offered to men and women and ensure that women get the same training and development as men.” Companies also need to train women headed for leadership to negotiate for resources. “Instead of targeting salary as a goal when negotiating for higher positions, women should focus on securing the means to increase their performance and future advancement. When promotions come up, advocates can play a significant role in a woman’s rise to the top. Different than mentors, corporate sponsors endorse a promising woman’s accomplishments and keep upper-level management advised about her achievements. They also act as career guides and sounding boards.”
