CGO Speaker Series: Unmasking Masculinity
Date: Wednesday, April 16, 2008
Time: 12 noon - 1:30pm
Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room
Speaker: Professor Robin Ely, Harvard Business School
Topic: Unmasking Masculinity
For years, CGO has been helping organizations relax gendered norms that are a barrier to equity and effectiveness. This presentation is a case study of offshore oil platforms where the company accomplished this on its own by focusing solely on effectiveness. Offshore oil rigs may seem an unlikely place to relax the masculine gendering of work norms. Yet, this is exactly the environment in which researcher Robin Ely and co-investigator Debra Meyerson found men proactively adopting traditionally non-masculine work behaviors such as acknowledging physical limitations, expressing vulnerability and attending to their own and others emotions.
