CGO Bystander Awareness Training at the Five College Consortium Diversity Day

Maureen Scully and Gina LaRoche provided the newly created program of Bystander Awareness Training to over 100 participants at the Five-College Consortium Diversity Day, held at Amherst College in Northampton, MA on January 18. Maureen and Gina also gave the morning keynote address at the conference which was designed to heighten the skills and awareness of diversity issues and provide training to people in all areas of work at the five colleges. Bystander Awareness Training, provides specific examples and skills to empower people to take on this challenging but important role. Shifting the focus off the “offended” and the “perpetrator” opens up a space for everyone to own a role in shaping their organizations to be places where diverse contributions are valued. Bystander training emphasizes the impact that all people, not just managers, have in addressing instances of bias and harassment in the workplace and other settings. Based upon previous work done at MIT, CGO, in collaboration with Third Sector New England (TSNE) has refined the workshop. CGO has also created a learning community of trainers in this program who are engaged in providing the training in a variety of organizations and meeting occasionally to learn from each other.
