Professor Deborah Kolb featured on CNN
Simmons SOM’s Deborah Kolb, Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Chair for Women and Leadership, was featured on CNN American Morning on October 6, in a segment discussing the recent Representative Mark Foley scandal. Hosts Soledad O’Brien and Miles O’Brien asked whether there were any lessons learned for what happens in a typical office in the case of alleged sexual harassment. Kolb said, “Often people who may be important to the organization in lots of ways, maybe they’re rainmakers, they really have an important account, they get a pass. We know that those kinds of things happen. It’s often because of great performers, you don’t want to lose them.” And even often times news of a problem doesn’t get to the very top because executives in the corner office are insulated. “Sometimes that leader can be sending a message that says, I’ve often heard this; no news is good news.’” “They [the victim] feel when they raise those issues there are going to be negative consequences. And, guess what, there are negative consequences. People miss out on promotions. They find themselves stuck.”
