What's the value of a mentor? Stacy Blake-Beard gives Newsday an answer
The Nov. 20 “Change@work” column titled, “Mentors’ odyssey picks up a thoroughly modern pace,” explores the range of definitions of mentoring. Does mentoring matter anymore now that people change employers and careers so often? The author asks “if this quick-hit coaching and advising can even be considered mentoring. Or is the definition of mentoring simply expanding?” SOM associate professor and CGO affiliate Stacy Blake-Beard spoke about the value of all mentoring activities regardless of name. “[There are] two major support relationships for employees: The first is a sponsor, someone who helps increase your visibility by suggesting you for key assignments and vouching for and supporting your work. [This person]knows you well enough to be willing to back you and use up a social chit,” Blake-Beard says.
