MBA Office Updates As is expected in the first month of the semester, many new students are hitting their first wall in the program because they are already busy with one or two courses, and a third course, Strategy 1, started last night. We talked in Foundations about all the adjustments that coming back to school involves, but it seems much more real when it is actually happening. Use me or your classmates to talk it through what strategies are working for them. For issues in the classroom, go talk to your faculty member. It is a transition and remember, every MBA student has gone through similar adjustments, so you are not alone! Returning students already have an accounting exam next week and some have 3 deliverables due next week! The ramp up into spring term has already begun from talking to you this week! MBA Analogy for Mary D.'s Sports Fans! The Super Bowl is Sunday and it is a classic event because many people really don’t like football, but love the commercials and CBS has already sold out of advertising minutes. Anyone who has taken marketing may look at these commercials very differently than they did before they took the course! I think of the Super Bowl as a classic example of preparation, adjustments and execution. Some students will have an Accounting test next week. Some students have 3 deliverables due next week. Strategy 1 started last night. These are moments to see how well you are preparing and how you execute. Some of you will need to make adjustments, some of you will stay the course and continue doing what you have done in the past that has brought success. Go Saints! “Maturity is the capacity to endure uncertainty.” --John Finley “Don't waste life in doubts and fears; spend yourself on the work before you, well assured that the right performance of this hour's duties will be the best preparation for the hours and ages that will follow it.”-- Ralph Waldo Emerson The Academic Program Office is now on Twitter! Follow us at SOMProgOffice! We'll send out updates on when papers come in, when we decide to put things in your mailbox, remind you of upcoming events, and more! MBA Oath There is a student initiative underway to have an SOM chapter or similar student group working on the MBA Oath that has become popular at many business schools. Social Entrepreneur Contest The University of Texas at Austin and Dell are searching for student social entrepreneurs to dream up ingenious ideas to change the world. College students worldwide are invited to enter the 2010 Dell Social Innovation Competition for a chance to win $50,000 to turn their ideas into a new business or nonprofit with a mission to change lives for the better. The deadline to enter is March 1, 2010. Students can submit their ideas online at http://www.dellsocialinnovationcompetition.com. Along with students, citizens worldwide are invited to comment on, vote for and discuss the ideas in the online community forum. Innovation Economy Industry Expo: Exploring and Thriving According to the New York Times, “Many of the great job creators of the past 25 years are companies that were barely visible in 1980 or even nonexistent: Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot, Starbucks, Amazon, Intel, Microsoft, Google, Genentech, Medtronic and others. All of them were founded by entrepreneurs and are run by innovative leaders. Their ingenuity created the jobs boom in those years and enabled them to dominate global markets for their products.” For those of you thinking about career advancement and/or a career transition in 2010, don’t miss this opportunity to meet some of the state’s hottest entrepreneurial ventures. 5:00-6:10pm Industry Expo: Meet with Representatives from Entrepreneurial Ventures Sponsored by SOM Career Services Office in partnership with the SOM Entrepreneurship Program.
