Welcome to all of our new students that started in Foundations this week and to all our students returning for another year! We had 58 students begin the MBA program in both the day and evening cohorts. They are off to a great start and they are looking forward to this next chapter in their personal and professional lives! Classes started today with Communication Strategies in the day and both Creativity and Managerial Accounting tonight! It is supposed to be a beautiful long weekend, enjoy it as free weekends will be a true scarcity for a while!

The SOM and Simmons College will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2009. You will have no access to the SOM building on Monday.
During the week, our office hours are Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-6:30pm and Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm.
Oana Ghiga gave birth to a baby girl yesterday, September 1st (her birthday also!). Her name is Ilinca and she is 10pounds, 8.5 ounces, 20 3/4 inches. Everyone is doing great!!
Academic Year Travel Courses for MBA Students
Spring 2010 to India: Travel during Winter Break, January 2-17 and will focus on Sustainable Business and will be led by Professor Vipin Gupta.
Travel costs all inclusive (airfare, visa, ground transportation, meals, double shared lodging, excursions) are $3,200. Tuition costs are additional.
Investments with Professor Indra Guertler on Thursday nights. There is a pre-requisite of Finance required for this course.
Consumer Behavior, which has 3 face to face meeting times on Sept 24, Oct 15 and Nov 12, 4:15-6pm. The rest is a virtual independent study with Professor Jill Avery.
Public Speaking on Thursday nights with Professor Mary Shapiro.
We will have our SOM exec in Residence, Pat Fili-Krushel here from Sept. 21-23. She will be in MBA Leading during the day, have lunch with day and evening MBA students, and then have a keynote address on Tuesday, Sept 22 moderated with Prof. Debbie Kolb from the SOM and Prof. Kathleen McGinn from HBS from 6-8pm. BIO-Patricia Fili-Krushel is Executive Vice President of Administration of Time Warner Inc.
In this role, Ms. Fili-Krushel works closely with the other members of Time Warner’s senior management team and its operating divisions on a variety of organizational, developmental and diversity issues. Her responsibilities include oversight of philanthropy, corporate human resources, worldwide recruitment, employee development and growth, compensation and benefits, and security.
Before joining Time Warner in July 2001, Ms. Fili-Krushel had been CEO of WebMD Health since April 2000.
From July 1998 to April 2000, Ms. Fili-Krushel was President of the ABC Television Network. ABC Television Network’s ranking improved from third to first in the ratings during her tenure. Prior to becoming President of the ABC Television Network, Ms. Fili-Krushel was President of ABC Daytime, and was responsible for introducing the daytime talk show "The View” and for leading ABC's daytime programming schedule to the number one position among women 18-49 years old. While at ABC, she conceived and orchestrated SoapNet, a 24-hour soap opera cable network.
Before joining ABC in 1993, Ms. Fili-Krushel had been with Lifetime Television since 1988 as both Group Vice President of Hearst/ABC-Viacom Entertainment Services (HAVES), and Senior Vice President of Programming and Production of Lifetime Television. Prior to Lifetime, Ms. Fili-Krushel held several positions with Home Box Office, culminating her tenure as Vice President of Business Affairs and Production. Before joining HBO, Ms. Fili-Krushel worked for ABC in various positions, including Program Controller for ABC Sports.
Ms. Fili-Krushel holds a B.S. degree from St. John’s University and an M.B.A. degree from Fordham University.
In 1998, Fortune featured Ms. Fili-Krushel among its “50 Most Powerful Women.” She has been recognized by New York Women in Communications, Inc. through their Matrix Awards for her contribution to the field of broadcasting. In 2006, she was inducted into the Museum of Television & Radio’s “She Made It” Collection. She received the prestigious Vision Award for her contributions on behalf of the creative arts. The City of New York awarded Ms. Fili-Krushel the Crystal Apple Award for her distinctive career achievements and contributions to the entertainment community in New York. In 1993, she received the Women in Film Muse Award.
Ms. Fili-Krushel serves on the Board of Trustees of The Public Theater of New York where she is Chair of the Nominating Committee, the Board of Trustees of The Paley Center for Media, and Mayor Bloomberg’s Commission on Women’s Issues.

Each fall Partners HealthCare, the integrated healthcare delivery system founded by Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, holds the Connected Health Symposium. This is a meeting focused on information technology innovations in support of patient self-management, personal maintenance of health and wellness, and aging with independence.
With over 1,000 attendees at last year’s event, the Symposium is the largest meeting of its kind in the world, dedicated to helping health care move beyond the hospital and clinic and into the day-to-day lives of consumers and patients, aided by computers, cell phones, the Internet, sensors, personal service robots. In 2009 the Symposium celebrates its 6th Anniversary and takes place at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel on October 21st and 22nd -- a beautiful time of year, of course, to be in the city. Entrepreneurship Program Garners Six-Figure Support from Two Foundations
(August 3, 2009) With crucial support from the Coleman Foundation and the Will J. Reid Foundation, the SOM will extend the opportunities offered through its nationally acclaimed Entrepreneurship Program into the undergraduate college, the non-business Simmons community, and to local community college entrepreneurship efforts. Founded in 2005 as a certificate-only offering to MBA-trained women, the curriculum expanded into a full-fledged program in 2007.
The Coleman Foundation has pledged $93,000 over two years, and the Will J. Reid Foundation has pledged $51,000 over two years.
"Building partnerships between Simmons and organizations like the Reid and Coleman Foundation is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job as Director of the Entrepreneurship Program at Simmons," said SOM Professor Teresa Nelson. "The people behind those institutional names – Mike Hennessy and Clark McCain at the Coleman Foundation and Elizabeth Moore Westbrook '80 at the Will J. Reid Foundation – really understand who we are and what we are working to accomplish. They gave us the capital to access the tools to reach many more women who each have that one great idea – that passion – to build and grow a viable, community sustaining business or social enterprise."
The funds will be used to develop the following three initiatives: a minor and "mini-minor" in entrepreneurship to all majors of Simmons College and the Colleges of the Fenway; co-curricular programming with the non-business Simmons community; and networks with area community colleges through providing SOM graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship student mentors to community college students.
Since its inception in 2005, the Entrepreneurship program has garnered national recognition and developed groundbreaking initiatives. In 2006 and 2008 Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review named the program as one of the top 25 entrepreneurship programs in the nation, among a set of 2,300 schools. It was recognized by Fortune Small Business in 2006 as one of the 10 most innovative entrepreneur programs in the United States.
The program has built a research program in entrepreneurship and gender/entrepreneurship that has national and international reach, particularly on issues of women entrepreneurs and women's entrepreneurship education. The program has developed a successful business plan competition for graduating MBA students and alumnae, and in 2009 launched a post-Certificate support and mentoring program.
Alumnae of the program are generating real-world, proven successes. In the 2009 cohort, all 12 women are building business plans they intend to actualize within the next three years; two have already launched their ventures. The four-course sequenced program teaches business and professional skills to design, fund and launch, sustainable, scalable ventures with impact. The curriculum is complemented by a range of co-curricular activities including mentor pairing, a business plan competition, entrepreneur and scholar in residence programs, and special events including speaker and lecture series.
The Coleman Foundation was a key partner in the program's 2005 launch, providing essential seed funding through the Foundation's Excellence in Entrepreneurship Education project (2005-08). In 2007 the School began to explore the potential to widen the reach of its entrepreneurship effort. As a result, the Entrepreneurship Program was established, with the graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship as a core element.
