Beginning of Mary D.'s Sports Analogies

I watched the highlights of the Red Sox/Angels game last night and was struck with the lack of effort the Angels left fielder displayed on a bloop fly ball that cost them the game. He just sort of drifted over with no sense of urgency at all and the ball drops in front of him giving the Red Sox the win. It was stunning to me in a game that means something to the Angels that he didn’t even try. My analogy to you is that it is important that you give 100% to try and do the best job possible all the time. Come to class prepared, and try your best. You do not want to let your colleagues and your faculty down with half hearted effort, but don’t let yourself down either.

Global Pro-Bono Consulting Opportunity with ISB - September 20th deadline to apply

As part of Mary Shapiro’s  Public Speaking class, they are going to The Studio, a small clothing store on Harvard St. in Brookline, on the evening of Oct 22.   Once there we will do several things:

The 3 women owners would give fashion tips on how to dress to convey authority and credibility, and how to “stretch” your wardrobe in these economic times. The women will also talk about themselves as business entrepreneurs.  You can read the HBS case about The Studio as background.  The owners would answer questions, and update the case to talk about the impact of the economy on small businesses.

Semester Work Opportunity Running the Accounting Computer Labs in the UG Program

Fall Semester job opportunity that works with SOM Prof. Mindy Nitkin running the computer labs for the accounting course. Requirements are availability on Monday afternoons, from 2:30-6:30pm through December 9. Pay is around $12-14 an hour. Must have really strong interpersonal skills to work with UG students and outstanding excel skills. Academic Year Travel Courses for MBA Students

We will again offer two different travel courses this year and the deadline for applying is Oct 30, with a deposit of $1000.   The rest of the funds are due by Nov 6. 

Spring 2010 to India: Travel during Winter Break, January 2-17 and will focus on Sustainable Business and will be led by Professor Vipin Gupta.
Spring 2010 to the UAE: Travel during Spring Break, March 5-14. The UAE trip will focus on Women’s Leadership, led by Professor Lynda Moore.

Travel costs all inclusive (airfare, visa, ground transportation, meals, double shared lodging, excursions) are $3,200. Tuition costs are additional.

Each course is 3 credits, and there will be some prework in advance of travel. Students will visit local universities and businesses, and meet local scholars and business executives.

Executive in Residence: Pat Fili-Krushel, Executive Vice President at Time Warner

She will be in MBA Leading during the day, have lunch with day and evening MBA students, and then have a keynote address on Tuesday, Sept 22 moderated with Prof. Debbie Kolb from the SOM and Prof. Kathleen McGinn from HBS from 6-8pm. BIO-Patricia Fili-Krushel is Executive Vice President of Administration of Time Warner Inc.

In this role, Ms. Fili-Krushel works closely with the other members of Time Warner’s senior management team and its operating divisions on a variety of organizational, developmental and diversity issues. Her responsibilities include oversight of philanthropy, corporate human resources, worldwide recruitment, employee development and growth, compensation and benefits, and security.

Before joining Time Warner in July 2001, Ms. Fili-Krushel had been CEO of WebMD Health since April 2000.

From July 1998 to April 2000, Ms. Fili-Krushel was President of the ABC Television Network. ABC Television Network’s ranking improved from third to first in the ratings during her tenure. Prior to becoming President of the ABC Television Network, Ms. Fili-Krushel was President of ABC Daytime, and was responsible for introducing the daytime talk show "The View” and for leading ABC's daytime programming schedule to the number one position among women 18-49 years old. While at ABC, she conceived and orchestrated SoapNet, a 24-hour soap opera cable network.

Before joining ABC in 1993, Ms. Fili-Krushel had been with Lifetime Television since 1988 as both Group Vice President of Hearst/ABC-Viacom Entertainment Services (HAVES), and Senior Vice President of Programming and Production of Lifetime Television. Prior to Lifetime, Ms. Fili-Krushel held several positions with Home Box Office, culminating her tenure as Vice President of Business Affairs and Production. Before joining HBO, Ms. Fili-Krushel worked for ABC in various positions, including Program Controller for ABC Sports.

Ms. Fili-Krushel holds a B.S. degree from St. John’s University and an M.B.A. degree from Fordham University.

In 1998, Fortune featured Ms. Fili-Krushel among its “50 Most Powerful Women.” She has been recognized by New York Women in Communications, Inc. through their Matrix Awards for her contribution to the field of broadcasting. In 2006, she was inducted into the Museum of Television & Radio’s “She Made It” Collection. She received the prestigious Vision Award for her contributions on behalf of the creative arts. The City of New York awarded Ms. Fili-Krushel the Crystal Apple Award for her distinctive career achievements and contributions to the entertainment community in New York. In 1993, she received the Women in Film Muse Award.

Ms. Fili-Krushel serves on the Board of Trustees of The Public Theater of New York where she is Chair of the Nominating Committee, the Board of Trustees of The Paley Center for Media, and Mayor Bloomberg’s Commission on Women’s Issues.

Program Description
 Learn about India's sustainability challenges, political, economic, socio-cultural, technological, ecological, gender, fair trade.  We visit universities, businesses, micro sites, nonprofits, markets, restaurants, and cultural sites, in different States for a diversity of approaches to sustainability.  Participate in an international conference on gender and sustainability, and network with local students and experts.

Course highlights
Adventure: Experience the wonders of India from The 7th wonder Taj Mahal, to the elephant and camel rides, cultural villages, and ethnic dresses, meals, and festivals.
Basics: Transform how you think about India as you encounter her diversity, and debrief.
Case dialogues: Get inspired through live case dialogues of how women in India are at the forefront of sustainability, ecological, economic, and social.

2) GSM 590 - Cross-cultural Comparative Studies of Women leaders

UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi)
Travel dates    March 4-15, 2010
Class: Sat, Feb 20 and 27, and April 10, 1-5 pm (meet in class), and Sat, Mar 27, 1-5 pm (work online).
Program Description     Learn about the culture and women leadership of UAE by participating in an international conference, live case studies, and cultural excursions.  Meet representatives from the women's association, chambers of commerce, government ministries, United Nations office, and/or US embassy office.  Interact with women students, expatriate faculty members, and businesswomen and entrepreneurs from for profit and non profit sectors.

Course highlights
Adventure: Experience the palaces, mosques, forts, museums, heritage villages, souqs, and dessert safari.
Basics:  Network with the women students from the local universities, and learn about their gender and leadership journeys and aspirations, and the role of families, universities, society, and the government
Case Studies:  Live case studies of the challenges, opportunities and pathways to leadership for women.

Most organizational theories consider gender irrelevant.  In a meritocracy, it is assumed that performance criteria are all that is used to assign jobs, evaluate outcomes, and reward people with promotions, raises, opportunities and authority. Yet, decades of research show that organizations are, indeed, gendered.  Gender – not only the sex of individuals but also gender relations, expectations and norms – extensively affect how people are assigned, treated, and evaluated at work.  How can that be? Patricia Martin whose early work with David Collinson on “mobilizing masculinity” sheds light on the inner workings of gendering processes, answers this question and applies it to the 21st century workplace.  She offers a framework for understanding and analyzing dynamics in the workplace that characterizes gender as a social institution.   Professor Martin will offer an overview of the framework and identify some new phenomena--such as transnational business masculinity–and help us apply the framework to our own institutions and work situations.

Dr. Patricia Yancey Martin is Emerita Professor of Sociology at Florida State University (Tallahassee Florida USA) [with previous stints as Distinguished Visiting Professor at University of Delaware, Ohio State University, University of Tennessee, Universita degli Studi di Trento (in Italy), Ruhr University (in Germany), Gothenburg University (Sweden), and University of Illinois at Chicago (USA)]. Her interests include the practices of gender at work, sociology of the body, and women’s movements.  Martin also has recent papers on violence against women, with a focus on organizational responses to this aspect of gender relations. In all, she has written 90+ articles, two books, and edited a third book. She served as chair of her department before she retired and she remains active in the American Sociological Association, the Southern Sociological Society, the European Group on Organization Studies, Sociologists for Women in Society, and the Society for the Study of Social Problems.

Most recently she was Marie Jahoda Distinguished Feminist Professor of Women’s Studies at Ruhr University (Bochum, Germany) in 2007 and a Fulbright Scholar in Sweden in spring 2008. Martin serves as Associate editor for Gender, Work, and Organization and is now co-editing the Handbook on Gender, Work, and Organization. Finally, she is writing a book (with S. Bird) on Gender and Organizations.

Each fall Partners HealthCare, the integrated healthcare delivery system founded by Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, holds the Connected Health Symposium.  This is a meeting focused on information technology innovations in support of patient self-management, personal maintenance of health and wellness, and aging with independence.

Entrepreneurship Program Garners Six-Figure Support from Two Foundations

(August 3, 2009) With crucial support from the Coleman Foundation and the Will J. Reid Foundation, the SOM will extend the opportunities offered through its nationally acclaimed Entrepreneurship Program into the undergraduate college, the non-business Simmons community, and to local community college entrepreneurship efforts. Founded in 2005 as a certificate-only offering to MBA-trained women, the curriculum expanded into a full-fledged program in 2007.

The Coleman Foundation has pledged $93,000 over two years, and the Will J. Reid Foundation has pledged $51,000 over two years.

"Building partnerships between Simmons and organizations like the Reid and Coleman Foundation is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job as Director of the Entrepreneurship Program at Simmons," said SOM Professor Teresa Nelson. "The people behind those institutional names – Mike Hennessy and Clark McCain at the Coleman Foundation and Elizabeth Moore Westbrook '80 at the Will J. Reid Foundation – really understand who we are and what we are working to accomplish. They gave us the capital to access the tools to reach many more women who each have that one great idea – that passion – to build and grow a viable, community sustaining business or social enterprise."

The funds will be used to develop the following three initiatives: a minor and "mini-minor" in entrepreneurship to all majors of Simmons College and the Colleges of the Fenway; co-curricular programming with the non-business Simmons community; and networks with area community colleges through providing SOM graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship student mentors to community college students.

Since its inception in 2005, the Entrepreneurship program has garnered national recognition and developed groundbreaking initiatives. In 2006 and 2008 Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review named the program as one of the top 25 entrepreneurship programs in the nation, among a set of 2,300 schools. It was recognized by Fortune Small Business in 2006 as one of the 10 most innovative entrepreneur programs in the United States.

The program has built a research program in entrepreneurship and gender/entrepreneurship that has national and international reach, particularly on issues of women entrepreneurs and women's entrepreneurship education. The program has developed a successful business plan competition for graduating MBA students and alumnae, and in 2009 launched a post-Certificate support and mentoring program.

Alumnae of the program are generating real-world, proven successes. In the 2009 cohort, all 12 women are building business plans they intend to actualize within the next three years; two have already launched their ventures. The four-course sequenced program teaches business and professional skills to design, fund and launch, sustainable, scalable ventures with impact. The curriculum is complemented by a range of co-curricular activities including mentor pairing, a business plan competition, entrepreneur and scholar in residence programs, and special events including speaker and lecture series.

The Coleman Foundation was a key partner in the program's 2005 launch, providing essential seed funding through the Foundation's Excellence in Entrepreneurship Education project (2005-08). In 2007 the School began to explore the potential to widen the reach of its entrepreneurship effort. As a result, the Entrepreneurship Program was established, with the graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship as a core element.

We are proud to introduce Lauri Rich as our first-ever Talent Acquisition Executive-In-Residence.  Lauri has extensive Human Resources experience, with over 20 years in the field. Technology Updates

Greetings SOM Students!

On behalf of Technology at Simmons, welcome to the Main Campus!  Technology is here to help you have a smooth semester start as you settle in to your new space!

  • Need help with your computer?  Sign up for a Technology Self Help Clinic by calling (617-521.-2222) or emailing
  • Media Services has a variety of equipment is available for you to borrow including laptops and cameras:
  • The Technology Desk on the 1st floor of the Beatley Library Information Commons is staffed with Simmons students eager to help you use the computers and study rooms available to you throughout the Library. This includes the Media Viewing and Listening Room, where you may watch or listen to DVDs, VHS tapes, and broadcasts.
  • At the Circulation Desk on the 1st floor you may borrow, among other items, a laptop that has the Bloomberg application on it.
  • Do you wish to enhance your software skills?  Go to for a course catalog and to sign up for a workshop.

In addition to all of the resources around campus, the new SOM building has computing spaces available to you.

  • The MBA Resource Room on the 1st floor houses six computers and both a black/white and color pay-for-print printer.  Two of the computers are Macs that run Windows Vista or Mac OS X Leopard.
  • The MBA Living Room on the 2nd floor contains two Express Web Stations. 
  • There are also seven study rooms, all of which include a computer.  In addition, M205 and M230 include the following:
  • Large screen LCD monitor
  • Auxiliary audio and video inputs (e.g. for laptop)
  • VCR/DVD player
  • Audio/video recording (beta service: requires prior training)
