Bio
Dr. Gupta is the first holder of the Roslyn Solomon Jaffe Chair in Strategy at Simmons School of Management. He is also the Director of International Outreach at the School, and has been instrumental in launching a successful study abroad program, and developing faculty international teaching initiative, the international student outreach, and foreign partnerships.
Gupta is a pioneer in the field of "culturally sensitive strategy", and his research focuses on how the managers can guide the sustainable growth of corporations by developing and including the creative and innovative knowledge dormant in the unheard cultural voices, of which the emerging and globalizing markets, educational systems, family businesses, and women and other under-represented groups are the core nurturers and repositories. Gupta has researched extensively in the fields of strategy, and the role of culture, institutions, families, and entrepreneurship/ leadership in management, development, and change, in organizations and nations.
Gupta studies the developmental challenges faced by diverse under-privileged individuals, organizations, and nations; the lessons learned from the experiences of those who successfully rise up to the challenge; and the implications for furthering the cause of those who face substantial bottlenecks, with a special reference to India. He has authored fifteen books in these areas. His first two edited works “Creating Performing Organizations” and “Transformative Organizations” (both Sage Publications) were critically acclaimed in India. His next co-edited work “Culture, Leadership, and Organizations: The GLOBE Study of 62 Societies” has become a landmark study with a worldwide impact.
He has been the co-principal investigator of the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness Research Program (GLOBE), involving more than 170 investigators from 62 countries for the study of culture, leadership styles, and organizational performance. His textbook on Strategy – now in its second edition – has introduced influential new frameworks, well received in India where it has been marketed. Most recently, he has lead edited a pioneering compendium of 11 books on family businesses in different cultural regions of the world, and on the role of gender, with contributions from more than 200 authors around the world. He has published in a number of leading international journals and presented papers in several conferences worldwide.
Gupta previously held positions at Grand Valley State University, Fordham University and Wharton School, and has visited universities and academic conferences in more than 25 nationsbeen a guest faculty at multiple business schools in India since 1999. Gupta is a winner of the 2005 Scott Myers Award for Applied Research in the Workplace from the Society for Industrial Organization Psychologists.
