How do I sign up for SLIS Workshops? Are they free?
You can see a list of all workshops currently being offered by the Tech Lab here at http://gslistechlab.eventbrite.com. Click on a workshop title to register. All SLIS Tech Lab workshops are free and open to all current and former SLIS students.

How can I advertise SLIS events on the Tech Lab and Student Services information screens?
To post a slide with news or information of interest to SLIS students on our information screens, email a PowerPoint slide to SLISlab-tv@simmons.edu. Please include in the email an expiration date for the slide, as well as a contact person and email address. Announcements should be relevant to the SLIS community and may be moderated. We cannot promise to post slides on short notice, so plan ahead!

Can I have my own wiki or blog?
Any member of the SLIS community may request a wiki or a blog. To learn more, visit our wikis and blog page.

What should I do if my Simmons username and password are not working?
Your Simmons common login will work for Webmail, AARC, eLearning, MySimmons, SLIS Moodle, library resources, personal web pages, and SLIS Wikis. To log in to Simmons computers and file servers, use your Simmons username and your file server password (may be different from your password for Webmail).

If you forget either of your Simmons passwords, please call the Help Desk at 617-521-2222. (Unfortunately, the Tech Lab staff does not have the ability to reset Simmons passwords). For more information, visit

Continuing Education (CE) Moodle and SLIS Blogs each have unique logins. If you can't remember your login information, you can use the automatic password reset option available on their login pages or contact gslislab@simmons.edu for more help.

Can the TRAs help me with my homework?
The TRAs are happy to answer your questions about Tech Lab services and software. While TRAs may be able to help you with resources and software related to your coursework, they will not be able to help with specific assignments.

Printing and Scanning

How do I print in the Tech Lab?
To print in the Tech Lab, send your print job to the printer and swipe your Simmons ID card at the Pay4Print machine. All Simmons users receive 400 free black and white pages per semester from any Simmons College public computer. For more information, see http://servicedesk.simmons.edu/campusprint

Can I print in color?
Yes. You can print in color for $0.75/page. Please ask a TRA for assistance.

How do I print double-sided Word documents?
To print double-sided on a PC, from the Print window, click Properties. Next to Print on Both Sides, check the checkbox.

To print double-sided on a Mac, from the Print window, from the Copies & Pages drop-down menu, choose Layout. From the Two-Sided drop-down menu, choose Long-edge binding.

How do I print to the Tech Lab printers from my laptop?

Can I scan documents/pictures?
Yes, you can scan documents and pictures. If you need assistance, a TRA will be happy to help you.


Alumni

What happens to my email?
Simmons email accounts will be terminated without warning in as soon as a few weeks after graduation. Please back up any important email before you graduate and sign up for free email forwarding through Simmons Alumnet to avoid missing any messages after your account is removed.

What happens to my web pages on the Simmons server?
Network accounts are also terminated without warning in as soon as a few weeks after graduation. We recommend downloading all files hosted on your Simmons server space before leaving. Websites are not archived by the College. If you need help with this process, please contact the Tech Lab or see our documentation on FTP.

What happens to my blog?
You may continue to use your SLIS blog after you graduate. However, we reserve the right to remove blogs inactive for over one year.

What happens to my wiki after I graduate?
If you requested that your wiki be accessible only to users with a Simmons ID, you will not be able to use your wiki after graduation because your Simmons ID will no longer be valid. If you opened your wiki to users beyond the Simmons community, you will be able to use your wiki after graduation. However, we reserve the right to remove wikis inactive for over one year. If you have any questions about your wiki, contact the Tech Lab.

Can I use the Tech Lab after I graduate?
As an alum of the program, you are welcome to use the lab and its services with the exception of checking out media equipment. You must have a valid alumni ID, which can be obtained at the Alumni Office on the 1st floor of the Main Campus Building.
