» D.P.T. Bridge Program FAQs

  1. What are the application deadline dates?

    Deadline dates:

    • Summer term (May): March 1
    • Fall term (September): June 1
    • Spring term (January): November 1
  2. What if some of my application materials have not arrived by the deadline date?

Due to the time needed to review applications, receive deposits and register for classes, it is very possible that you will not be considered for the start term you wish. If we have not received all the required information by the deadline date, you will be contacted to determine if you wish us to carry over your application to the next term.   We can only carry over your applications for a maximum of two academic semesters.

  3. What is the length of the program?

You must complete a minimum of 12 credits of coursework. This usually requires one or two years. Courses are taken two or three semesters of each year.   You do not need to take courses in consecutive semesters; however, you must finish within three years. You may take up to 15 credits for no additional charge.

If you are not yet licensed, you may be interested in our professional D.P.T. program.

  4. Will you review my transcripts beforehand and determine what courses I need?

Due to the time and effort involved in reviewing transcripts and other components of the application, we are not able to review and evaluate your transcripts before you submit your application.

  5. I have a bachelor's degree in P.T. Am I still eligible for the program or must I also have a master's degree?

You may apply to the D.P.T. Bridge program if you have a Certificate, Baccalaureate, or Master's degree in physical therapy and you are a licensed P.T. in the U.S. If you are not yet licensed, you may be interested in our professional D.P.T. program. You must also have worked in the P.T. profession within the past three years in either a clinical or teaching setting.

  6. What is the difference between basic statistics and research and the courses in the Research Sequence? What course content is required?

Basic statistics courses introduce the fundamental concepts of conducting scientific inquiry and present techniques used to describe and analyze data. It is necessary to have a sound understanding of the following concepts and operations before beginning the D.P. T. Bridge research courses: probability, binomial, normal distributions, sample statistics, statistical hypotheses, linear regression, and correlation.

The first course in the D.P.T. Bridge program will help you understand how data are acquired from a survey and how they are managed and analyzed. Without a strong foundation in principles of research and basic statistical analysis, a student would have a very difficult time completing these two courses. The second course is a Research Seminar. In the online version of this course, students design their own research project (which they may or may not actually carry out). In the campus version of the course, students work in small groups performing a systematic review of the literature based on a topic of interest.

  7. What if I have taken my basic coursework over five years ago? Ten years?

We will accept coursework completed within the past 10 years, but the student assumes full responsibility for reviewing the information and being able to participate in required research courses at the doctoral level. We strongly recommend that applicants who took these courses more than five years ago take a review course.

  8. If I can waive courses with the Advanced Standing application, can I receive the degree in a shorter amount of time by completing the remaining credits?

Even if you waive all of the courses on the Advanced Standing application, you must still complete at least 12 credits in the program. The remaining credits can be fulfilled with electives.

  9. Do I need to come to the Simmons campus?

No. All of the required courses, and a sufficient number of electives are available online. However, if you reside locally and wish to take a campus-based course, you may do so.

  10. What is the minimum number of required courses that I must take to receive the D.P.T.?

Twelve credits is the minimum number of courses and fifteen is the maximum.

  11. What is the minimum and maximum number of courses I can take each semester?

Students are NOT required to take a course every semester, but are expected to complete the degree in three years or less. You may take as many courses as you would like in a semester, but we usually advise students who are working full-time to take only one course at a time.

  12. If I am not currently practicing in a clinical or academic setting, am I eligible for the program?

Yes. As long as you are still licensed and have practiced within the last three years, you are eligible for the program.

  13. What level of familiarity with technology is required in this program?

You need to be able to find documents on the web, search through a database, send and receive email and attachments. You should be comfortable in using a word processing program such as Microsoft Word and presentation software such as PowerPoint. Some courses expect you to use data base programs such as Excel, and to learn a statistical software package, MiniTab.

  14. May I defer my enrollment? If so, how?

If accepted, you must write a letter requesting a deferral to the Assistant Dean/Director of Admission no later than two weeks before the start of the term to which you were admitted. You must indicate what you will do in the interim. If you are granted a deferral, you must submit a non-refundable enrollment deposit of $500 to hold a place in the next class.   Deferrals are applicable for a maximum of two academic semesters.

  15. What is the cost of the program?

The total cost of the DPT Bridge program is $9,000.
