» Certificate in Clinical Genetics

In response to a growing awareness of the impact of genetics on health throughout the lifespan, the increasing complexity of genetic testing and counseling, and to support national and organizational recommendations to offer genetic testing and counseling services by health professionals, a Certificate in Clinical Genetics (post-bachelor's)  is being offered by the School for Health Studies. This certificate is ideal for nurses, social workers, psychologists, physician assistants, nutritionists, and other health professionals working with clientele impacted by or at risk for developing genetic disorders.

The application deadline is June 1. Entry is for September only. New applications are available here in January of each year.

This program will prepare students to work in a complementary and supportive way with genetics professionals. This certification will document that graduates have obtained the knowledge and skills needed to provide accurate, initial support to clients who may have genetically-related health concerns, such as assessing possible genetic risk and knowing when to refer to genetics providers.  Graduates will be able to converse knowledgeably with patients and genetics professionals, identify risk, and to be better able to manage patients with genetic disorders. Graduates will be equipped to work in complementary and supportive ways with genetics professionals as they provide current and accurate information and services to their patients and clients.

The 18 credit program is offered entirely online. Courses include: Fundamentals of Human Genetics; Overview of Genetic Counseling; Medical Genetics; Ethical, Legal, Social Issues in the Provision of Genetic Services; and an Independent Study. The certificate can be completed in a minimum of 18 months.
