Graduate Nutrition Student Sari Kalin ('09) Awarded Schweitzer Fellowship

Sari Kalin, an SHS '09 graduate student, has been awarded a Schweitzer Fellowship. Her project will involve assisting Operation Frontline Boston to create a supplemental packet of recipes that reflect Boston's ethnic diversity. As part of this project, she will also teach nutrition classes to special populations served by this organization.

A recent research study concerning the caloric intake of specialty coffees, conducted by Dr. Elizabeth Metallinos-Katsaras, assistant professor of nutrition, was highlighted in the November issue of ALLURE magazine.

Teresa Fung, assistant professor in nutrition, published a research paper on "Dietary patterns, meat intake, and the risk of type 2 diabetes in women" in the November issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. Also, Dr. Fung's study on the link between the risk of type-2 diabetes in women and a Western diet was picked up by Reuters Wire Service in mid-November and ran in newspapers around the world.

Nancie Herbold, Ruby Winslow Linn Professor of Nutrition, published "Vitamin, Mineral, Herbal and Other Supplement Use by Adolescents" in the November issue of Topics in Clinical Nutrition. Herbold and Larissa Farnam '04 presented a poster at the Massachusetts Dietetic Association Meeting entitled "Dance Nutrition 101: Dance Education for Pre-Professional Ballet Students."

Sari Edelstein, assistant professor of nutrition, published "Private Practice Nutrition Referrals and Patient Ration" in the July-Sept. issue of Topics in Clinical Nutrition.

Nutrition Department to Implement 24/7 Learning by CD-ROM
Professor Nancie Herbold, program director and Ruby Winslow Linn Professor of Nutrition, and Janet Washington, coordinator of the Certificate of Sports Nutrition program, were recently awarded a mini-grant to implement 24/7 learning via CD-ROM for students learning nutritional interviewing and counseling skills.

Nutrition Professor Awarded Prestigious Grant
Assistant Professor of Nutrition Elizabeth Metallinos-Katsaras and collaborators at Tufts Medical School were recently awarded a two-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control. The goal of the research is to enumerate and evaluate current national survey activities and surveillance systems of individual behaviors and attitudes related to nutrition, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and weight status among school-age children.
