Student News

Sari Kalin, an SHS '09 graduate student, has been awarded a Schweitzer Fellowship. Her project will involve assisting Operation Frontline Boston to create a supplemental packet of recipes that reflect Boston's ethnic diversity. As part of this project, she will also teach nutrition classes to special populations served by this organization.

Ann Trioufanova was selected as the 2008 Outstanding Dietetics Student for a Didactic Program in Dietetics by the Massachusetts Dietetic Association. Anna earned her DPD certificate from Simmons in May 2008.

Nutrition Faculty News

Dr. Elizabeth Metallinos-Katsaras, associate professor of nutrition, presented a paper at the Massachusetts Dietetic Association's annual meeting in March 2009. Her presentation was entitled "How is food insecurity related to childhood overweight? Results from a low-income population." A research study concerning the caloric intake of specialty coffees, conducted by Dr Metallinos-Katsaras was highlighted in the November issue of ALLURE magazine.

Dr. Teresa Fung, assistant professor in nutrition, presented a paper entitled," Preventing Cognitive Decline in the Elderly: The Role of Nutrition," at the Massachusetts Dietetic Association's annual meeting in March 2009. She also published a research paper on "Dietary patterns, meat intake, and the risk of type 2 diabetes in women" in the November issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. Dr. Fung's study on the link between the risk of type-2 diabetes in women and a Western diet was picked up by Reuters Wire Service in mid-November and ran in newspapers around the world. She gave a talk at the Regional Conference of the American Culinary Federation in Boston on "Diet and Disease: Connection to Action,"

Dr. Lisa Brown, assistant professor of nutrition, presented a talk on "Dealing with Food Allergies: Avoiding the Big Eight" at the Regional Conference of the American Culinary Federation in Boston.

Dr. Nancie Herbold, Ruby Winslow Linn Professor of Nutrition, and Larissa Farnam '04 presented a poster at the Massachusetts Dietetic Association Meeting entitled "Dance Nutrition 101: Dance Education for Pre-Professional Ballet Students. Dr. Herbold also published "Vitamin, Mineral, Herbal and Other Supplement Use by Adolescents" in the November issue of Topics in Clinical Nutrition.

Dr. Sari Edelstein, associate professor of nutrition, is editing the third edition of her book, Nutrition in Publish Health: Handbook for Developing Programs and Services, and the second edition of her book, Life Cycle Nutrition: An Evidence-Based Approach. Dr. Judith Sharlin, lecturer in nutrition, is serving as co-editor on the second book. Dr. Edelstein also published Food and Nutrition at Risk in America: Food Insecurity, Biotechnology, Food Safety and Bioterrorism (Jones and Bartlett). This text covers the latest threats to our nation's food systems and polices needed in the future to ensure the health and welfare of our citizens. She also co-published, with Dr. Nancie Herbold, the Dietitian's Pocket Guide to Nutrition, a reference tool for recommended nutrition care for various medical conditions and problems.

Nutrition Department to Implement 24/7 Learning by CD-ROM
Professor Nancie Herbold, program director and Ruby Winslow Linn Professor of Nutrition, and Janet Washington, coordinator of the Certificate of Sports Nutrition program, were recently awarded a mini-grant to implement 24/7 learning via CD-ROM for students learning nutritional interviewing and counseling skills.

Nutrition Professor Awarded Prestigious Grant
Assistant Professor of Nutrition Elizabeth Metallinos-Katsaras and collaborators at Tufts Medical School were recently awarded a two-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control. The goal of the research is to enumerate and evaluate current national survey activities and surveillance systems of individual behaviors and attitudes related to nutrition, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and weight status among school-age children.
