» Nursing news archive 2003WEBCT Quizzes Used for Simmons Senior Level Undergraduate Students The licensing examination required for nursing registration after Simmons students graduate is called NCLEX. It consists of a test bank of questions administered by computer. Many of our students expressed concerns about taking examinations by computer because our methods had emphasized pencil and paper exams. During the spring of 2000, Ann Tamule, Simmons nursing instructor used Web CT to develop an on- line review course. The course consists of 14 quizzes and lectures divided topically by body system. It is focused on pathophysiology, pharmacology and nursing problems of patients with diseases of these systems. The students are required to complete 50 questions weekly. They are able to get immediate feedback about which questions they did not answer correctly and Ann Tamule is able to see how the group has performed. During the class sessions they discuss questions that the group had difficulty with and consider new ways to think about the questions. The students who graduated in 2000 showed an increased pass rate on the NCLEX over previous years. This class of 2001 is developing increasing facility with computerized testing. They seem to appreciate the prompt feedback the WebCt quizzes offer. The Simmons nursing faculty anticipate that this strategy will foster their success as well. |
