Spring 2008 Alumni and Professional Development Day

The theme of this one day conference was "Educate, Transform, Empower: Preparing Leaders for the 21st Century. Speakers included Dr. Alice Sapienza, Professor Health Care Administration, School of Health Sciences, Simmons College whose topic was "Developing the Competencies to Lead"; Mary Sinnott, Clinical Associate Professor, Physical Therapy, College of Health Professions, Temple University, Philadelphia whose presentation was titled: Interprofessional Practice-None of Us Is As Smart As All of Us and Colleen Kigin, who is the Chief of Staff, Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology, Boston whose address was "Introducing Innovative Technology into Health Care: What Does It Take? What Difference Does It Make?"

Spring 2007 Professional Education Conference

The National Association of Health Care Executives (NAHSE), sponsored by The School of Health Sciences- Health Care Administration and Nursing Programs, held it's second annual diversity conference on "Provider's Impact on Treatment in Healthcare: The Role of Diversity in Nursing", Friday, May 4, 2007. A distinguished group of panelist included:

  • Tom Smith, RN, Chief Nursing Officer & Senior Vice President Patient Care and Nursing Cambridge Health Alliance
  • Angelleen Peters-Lewis, RN, PhD, Nursing Director, GI Endoscopy Units, Perioperative Services, Massachusetts General Hospital
  • Sharon T. Callender, RN, MPH, Coordinator, Family & Community Health Services Mattapan Community Health Center After the presentations, the panelist fielded questions and discussed lessons from their own practical experience and research.

Spring 2007 Alumni and Professional Development Day

"Educate/Transform/Empower"
This academic symposium addressed the important topic of AIDS in Haiti. Keynote speakers included Mary C. Smith Fawzi, Sc.D., Epidemiologist, Partners in Health and Nevis Scrimshaw, Ph.D, M.D., Founder and President, International Nutrition Foundation. Sessions were offered to alumnae/i of the School of Health Studies, the School of Social Work, the College of Arts and Sciences Graduate School, and the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. This event was held at the Marriott Copley Place on Friday, March 30, 2007.

Spring 2006 Professional Education Conference

"The Quality of Work Life and the Quality of Patient Care"
The School of Health Sciences held its annual alumni day and professional education conference on April 28, 2006. The conference addressed the question of how the quality of work life affects the quality of patient care for clinical professionals. Dr. Sean P. Clarke, RN, PhD, CRNP, assistant professor of nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, delivered the keynote address. Panel presentations and discussions which followed addressed policy, legislation, and best practices and proposed remedies.

October 2005 Professional Education Conference

"Building Diversity in the Leadership of Healthcare Organizations - Lessons from Research and Practice"
Linda K. Paresky Conference Center, Main College Building Professor Janice Dreachslin of Pennsylvania State University, a leading researcher, spoke on "Essential Linkages: Diversity Leadership, Cultural Competence, and Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Health Care."A distinguished group of panelists then commented on Professor Dreachslin's presentation and discussed lessons from their own practical experience and research.

October 2005 Special Cross-departmental Conference

"Cleaning for a Healthy Indoor Environment for Children"
Linda K. Paresky Conference Center, Main College Building. This conference was sponsored by the Center for Hygiene and Health in the Home and Community at Simmons College. It focused the benefits of cleaning and disinfection in homes, schools, daycare centers, sports facilities, camps, and other facilities, to reduce the risk of infection acquisition and transmission and to aid in the prevention and control of mold. The conference also addressed the health hazards of cleaning products and concerns about antibiotic resistance.

Speakers included faculty from the Simmons College departments of biology, nursing, and nutrition, as well as speakers from the University of Ottawa (Center for Research on Environmental Microbiology), Harvard School of Public Health, Brigham and Young University, and University of North Carolina.

April 2004 Alumni Day and Professional Education Conference

"Building a Healthy Journey: Aging with Energy"
T
he Simmons School of Health Sciences held its annual Alumni Day and Professional Education Conference, "Building a Healthy Journey: Aging with Energy, " on April 16, 2004. This high quality, interdisciplinary conference addressed a critical issue affecting the elder population: healthy aging.

May 2003 CarePoints Conference for Parents of Children with Medically Complex Illnesses

The conference, which was held at the Holiday Inn in Brookline, was free for parents and offered at low cost for professionals, in keeping with the purpose of the program. The unique new CarePoints program, housed at the Simmons College School of Health Sciences and coordinated jointly with Wheelock College, is an attempt to promote parent-professional partnerships to enhance the quality of life for children with complex, sometimes life-threatening conditions.

April 2003 Alumni Day and Professsional Education Conference

"Performing Beyond the Limits:Understanding Eating Disorders in Female Athletes"
Keynote speakers were Nancy Clark '73 HS, nutritionist and author of Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook (2nd. ed.) and Joanne T. Pomodoro, clinical social worker and senior champion racquetball player. The conference was well-attended and drew significant media attention, including articles in the Boston Globe and Allston-Brighton Tab and interviews with the panelists on WCVB-TV and WHDH-TV.
