
Gary Bailey, MSW, ACSW
Hello everyone, I‘m an associate professor at the Simmons College Graduate School of Social Work, where I chair the Dynamics of Racism and Oppression sequence. In addition, I also serve as a clinical associate professor at the Simmons School of Health Sciences.
I am a proud Buckeye born and raised In Cleveland, Ohio, where I attended the University School which since its establishment in 1890, has served as a model for the American independent "country day school." I received my BA from the Eliot Pearson School of Child Study at Tufts University in 1977; and my MSW from Boston University School of Social Work in 1979.
I am very involved in the Simmons community here on campus. I chair the SSW Awards Committee, and the Simmons College Black Administrators, Faculty and Staff Council (BAFAS).I co–chaired the Simmons College Initiative on Human Rights and Social Justice. Additionally, I am a member of the Simmons Faculty Senate, and the Presidents Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council.
Here in Boston I have served on numerous boards and advisory groups including the Massachusetts Departments of Mental Health and Social Services Commissioners Advisory Groups, was President of the board of the AIDS Action Committee of Boston, was co–chair of the Children‘s Hospital Community Advisory Board, a member of the board at the Phillip Brooks House at Harvard University; the Massachusetts Maternity and Foundling Hospital Foundation; United Homes for Children; the Wang Center for the Performing Arts; Success by Six United Way of Mass Bay and, the Center for Family Connections Advisory Board.
I also am involved in the greater social work community. I was formerly the president of the 150,000 National Association of Social Workers (NASW-USA) located In Washington DC the worlds largest social work organization ( Brazil is the second largest) having served from 2003 until 2005; I am currently the chairperson of the National Social Work Public Education Campaign. I am a past president of the North American region of the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) located in Berne, Switzerland having served in that role from 2003 until 2006. I now chair the Federations Policy ,Advocacy and Representation Commission with responsibility for our SW teams at the UN.
I have been honored to receive many awards from the social work community. I was named Social Worker of the Year by both the National and Massachusetts chapters of the NASW in 1998, and was made a Social Work Pioneer by NASW in 2005. This year I was appointed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to the board of directors of the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority.
In May 2009 I was invited by the United States–Israel Educational Foundation to give a series of workshops and speeches throughout Israel as a part of the Funds outreach to African American leaders to visit Israel. The Fund was established in 1956 by an agreement between the governments of the United States and Israel, and administers the Fulbright educational exchange program in Israel.
My partner Richard McCarthy and our Bombay cat Grimaldi divide our time between our homes in Boston and Provincetown, Massachusetts.
