BOSTON (March 15, 2012) — Once again, Simmons College has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). The College has received this honor for six consecutive years.
The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, annually highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement by recognizing institutions that achieve meaningful, measureable outcomes in the communities they serve.
"Simmons has a long tradition of service to the community, and we are delighted that it continues to be recognized at a national level," said Simmons College President Helen Drinan.
The Scott/Ross Center for Community Service (S/RC) helped lead the engagement of nearly 2,600 students in approximately 54,100 hours of community service during the 2010-2011 academic year at the College. Working with various community partners, the S/RC has provided a number of successful initiatives to the community, including The Promising Pals Program, a literacy and mentoring program for students at the Timilty Middle School; a myriad of health and wellness programs through the Simmons Department of Physical Therapy; and the Simmons Goes Fit program, which promotes exercise and activity as a means to combat childhood obesity and other health ailments at the Tobin Community Center in Boston.
Simmons College Trustee and alumna Emily Scott Pottruck established the S/RC in 2000, in recognition of the College's long-time commitment to community service. The center serves the Greater Boston community by developing reciprocal partnerships with community organizations while enriching and expanding students' educational and co-curricular experiences.
Simmons College is a nationally recognized private university located in the heart of Boston. It offers undergraduate education for women, and renowned coeducational graduate programs in health sciences, education, liberal arts, social work, library and information science, and communications management, as well as the nation's first MBA program designed specifically for women.
