Biology Professor Elizabeth Scott, co-director of the Center for Hygiene and Health, was featured in media nationwide about germs in the home, including Woman's Day.com Sept. 16. She also was featured in a Sept. 22 New York Times article on pets passing on the disease MRSA to their owners. It made the NY Times "most frequently emailed" list and was a featured item on its Twitter page, which has nearly 2 million followers. Additionally, the hygiene center's H1N1 study showing that college students are not following CDC recommendations received media attention including Scott's interview on Martha Stewart Living Radio's Morning Living program (XM Radio) Sept. 30.

The September issue of Fitness Magazine and the October issue of Working Mother magazine both referenced Nutrition Professor Teresa Fung's study linking sugary beverages and heart disease.

Alumna Elizabeth Jordan Carr, first U.S. test-tube baby, was quoted in an Oct. 9 Associated Press obituary of her doctor, Frederick Wirth. The story was picked up by national and international outets, including the Chicago Sun-Times, Huffington Post, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, San Francisco Chronicle, MSNBC, The Canadian Press wire service, and The Star Online (Malaysia).

Political Science and International Relations Chair Zach Abuza was quoted in the Christian Science Monitor Sept. 18 about the death of Noordin Top, Southeast Asia's most-wanted terrorist.

Graduate School of Library and Information Science Student Peter Norman was quoted in a Sept. 4 CNN.com article on "The future of libraries, with or without books."

Africana Studies Chair Janie Ward was quoted in an Oct. 2 HispanicBusiness.com article on the increase of Latinos getting plastic surgery.

Nutrition Professor Elizabeth Metallinos-Katsaras' article on food insecurity, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, was picked up in medical media outlets, including EurekAlert, an online science news service by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and PhysOrg.com, a leading web-based science, research and technology news service

Graduate School of Library and Information Science Alumna Sylvia McDowell was featured in a Sept. 26 Associated Press article for her work on recovering Boston's black history with the Forest Hills Educational Trust.

A Sept. 27 Boston Globe feature story on three Afghani sisters who hope to use their educations to shape Afghanistan's future included Simmons student Shugufa Basij-Rasikhs, who will graduate this fall with degrees in public health and sociology.

School of Management Professor Stacy Blake Beard's selection as a member of Henry Louis Gates arrest review panel was mentioned in the Boston Globe Sept. 11. Articles also appeared in Sept. 14 editions of the Brockton Enterprise, Daily News Tribune (Waltham), Quincy Patriot Ledger, and MetroWest Daily News (Framingham).

Health Care Administration Professor John Lowe was quoted in the Sept. 21 Birmingham Business Journal article on the link between higher Blue Cross rates and increased health care worker layoffs.

The School of Management's Princeton Review Best 301 Business Schools ranking ran on the Reuters wire service Oct. 8, and was picked up by numerous media, including BizJournals.com, AOL Money News, Arizona Republic, Pacific Business News, Baltimore Business Journal, and TV station websites nationwide.

School of Social Work Professor Helen Reinherz was interviewed about her study on family arguments in a Sept. 22 CitizenLink.com radio interview (distributed by the nonprofit Focus on the Family), a Sept. 21 Denver Post article, and in the Oct. 6 Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The Sept. 24 Dorchester Reporter announced the nomination of Simmons alumna Pamela M. Dashiell as judge of the Dorchester Division of the Boston Municipal Court.

Alumna Nicole Urban was profiled in the October issue of Seattle Woman magazine about her role as a leading researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, concentrating on preventing women's cancer deaths.

School of Health Sciences Dean Gerry Koocher was quoted in an Oct. 18 Cape Cod Times article about how parents can help stop their kids from swearing. The article also ran in SouthCoastToday.com.

The Nashua Telegraph featured a Sept. 3 article on alumna Julie Tuttle, who was named Nurse of the Year at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, NH.

An article about alumna Dr. Barbara Gellman-Danley being named president University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College (Ohio) ran in the Sept. 2 Chillicothe Gazette.

Alumna Kristin Cashore and her second book, Fire, were featured in the Oct. 10 MiamiHerald.com.
