Nutrition Professor Teresa Fung was quoted in a June 2 U.S.News
& World Report article on foods from different cultures associated with better health. In it,
she describes the characteristics of a "prudent" eating pattern.
Simmons School of Social Work Professor Helen Reinherz and her Simmons Longitudinal Study were highlighted in the summer
issue of The American Scholar, an award-winning quarterly magazine
of public affairs, literature, science, history, and culture published by the Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Simmons School of Management Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in a June 6 Wall Street Journal blog about "speed mentoring." Blake-Beard said that
the 15-minute sessions, modeled after speed dating, should be called "speed networking," since real
mentoring takes time.
International
Relations Professor Zachary Abuza was quoted in a June 9
New York Times article about the weakening of terrorist
networks in Southeast Asia.
Excerpts from Bianca Jagger's commencement speech appeared in the June 15 New York Times in a
rundown of graduation addresses. It was one of only 14 of the nation's graduation ceremonies
excerpted.
Biology Professor Liz Scott, co-director of the Simmons College Center for Hygiene and Health in Home and
Community, was quoted in a July 3 Medscape Infectious Diseases
Medical News article about a new study on antibacterial products. In the article, Scott (who was not
involved in the research) was asked to review the strengths and limitations of the study, which indicates
that the use of antibacterial products may lead to the development of resistance to both biocides and
antibiotics. Scott also was quoted in an Associated Press article on a report that shows that kitchens are
higher in bacteria counts than bathrooms, that ran in late June in newspapers nationwide, including the
Des Moines Register, The Detroit
Free Press, and The Florida Times-Union. In the article, she recommends
cleaning up food spills with paper towels instead of sponges.
A June 23 Financial Times article announced the publishing of The Aspen Institute Guide to Socially Responsible MBA Programs 2008-2009,
which features the Simmons School of Management.
The June 15 Boston Sunday Globe covered the Simmons School of Social Work's suicide prevention conference and
interviewed Professor (and event organizer) Ruth Dean and alumna
Pat Cotter. The conference also was publicized on the HealthCare Review Northeast Network website June 9. HealthCare Review is the leading health care trade publication in New
England.
John Lowe, chair of health care administration, was mentioned in the Chronicle of Higher Education June 20 about his new role as chairman of
the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.
A May 28 International Herald Tribune (Paris, France) article on
customer satisfaction quoted the Simmons School of Management
professor Sylvia Maxfield about the attention companies are paying
to corporate social responsibility.
Simmons's crew team was mentioned in two
articles in the July issue of Rowing News about its placing in the
ECAC National Invitational. Simmons placed first in the women's novice grand final. Rowing News is a
monthly magazine for rowing enthusiasts.
Kristen Haack, director of College of Arts and Sciences graduate admission, was quoted in a
July 5 Boston Globe article about the surge in foreign college applicants. She
said she believes the dramatic increase is due to the favorable exchange rate for international
students.
Incoming student Connie Chan was featured in a June 26
Boston Globe article about her receiving the first City of
Boston/Turner Broadcasting System Inc. Scholarship.
Susan Sampson, director of the Simmons School of Management's Prince Program in Retail Management, was
quoted in the June 4 Worcester Telegram & Gazette in an
article about a local family business. She spoke about the importance of word-of-mouth in attracting
customers.
Graduate Education alumnus
Richard Brunson
was profiled in the June 23 Brockton Enterprise for winning an
award from the Carroll Center for the Blind. Brunson, who is blind, was recognized for his counseling work
at Bridge Over Troubled Waters.
An article about Kate Leonard being named Simmons's first
lacrosse coach appeared on the Williams College
website (www.williams.edu) and ran July 1 on the Lacrosse News
website at www.laxpower.com.
Undergraduate alumna Nicole Woolsey Biggart was profiled in the
June 20 Sacramento Business Journal. Biggart is dean of the
University of California Davis Graduate School of Management.
The June 24 Worcester Telegram & Gazette announced
Annie Hennigan's hire as head softball coach.
Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science
Professor Margaret Bush was quoted in a June 3 Belmont Citizen Herald about the Belmont library's collaboration with its
public schools to provide program for young adults.
Health Care Administration Professor
John Lowe was interviewed in a July 18 Boston Business Journal article about the trend in insurance companies linking
reimbursements to outcomes. Lowe, chair of the board of Emerson Hospital in Concord, spoke about the role
of board members in encouraging clinical changes in hospitals to improve quality and prevent errors.
