An article in the April issue of CondeNaste Portfolio magazine on sexism in the workplace featured an
interview with former Simmons School of Management co-founder
Ann Jardim. Also, this year's "MBA All Stars" Boston Business Journal featured a profile and photo about School of
Management student Janet Takaringwa on Friday, March 21.
The April issue of Good Housekeeping magazine cited a recent
Simmons College study led by Nutrition Professor Elizabeth
Metallinos-Katsaras on calories in coffee drinks.
Zach Abuza, professor of international
relations, was interviewed in a March 19
Cybercast News Service article about Easter threats against Christians in Indonesia by the
radical Islamist group Jemaah Islamiah. He also was interviewed in a March 20 AFP wire service article about violence in Thailand's Muslim south
provinces. AFP (Agence France-Presse) provides news coverage to
165 countries worldwide.
Alumna Desirae Simmons was featured in a February/March Career World article titled "Report from the Real World." Simmons
discussed how her years as a student volunteer and intern at Jumpstart led to a full-time position, and how
her former College roommates continue to be a source of support and friendship. Career World is published by the Weekly Reader Corporation.
Susanna Flug, associate director of service learning at the
Scott/Ross Center for Community Service, and senior
student Darcel Hunt were interviewed in a March 18 Boston Now article about the Boston Immersion Alternative Spring Break,
organized by Colleges of the Fenway. Hunt was one of the
students who spent her spring break tutoring local high school students and talking to them about
college.
A WIS-TV (Columbia, S.C.) website article about graduates schools' efforts
to recruit women in MBA programs included quotes from Simmons School
of Management Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands and student C.A. Webb. The story said the School of Management is designed specifically for
women, and that its curriculum is tailored by its research on the needs of women in business.
Performer and Grammy-winner Gloria Estefan, keynote speaker of the
May 3 School of Management Leadership Conference, was
interviewed in the March 12 Boston
Herald's "Star Tracks" entertainment column. also Lawrence
Langer, professor emeritus of English, was featured in a March 1 Boston
Globe article about a fraudulent Holocaust memoir by Misha Defonseca titled Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years. Langer, a Holocaust scholar, had
reviewed the manuscript for factual accuracy and pointed out numerous errors to the book's publisher.
An article about a recent Simmons Graduate School of Library and
Information Science graduation ceremony for 25 Vietnamese librarians ran in the March 12 issue of
Thanh Nien News, a daily Vietnam newspaper. A grant from Atlantic
Philanthropies enabled the librarian students to study at the Graduate School of Library and Information
Science before returning to Vietnam to complete their coursework.
Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science is
Professor Margaret Bush and Susan
Bloom, associate professor emerita of the Simmons Center for the
Study of Children's Literature, were thanked in an April 1 Horn
Book editorial. The two are retiring from service as reviewers for Horn Book, a publication
featuring reviews and articles about children's books.
The March 13 Boston Globe ran an article about the annual Belle of the Ball event and
Simmons's role as the site of the "boutique." The April 26 event offers free gowns to local high school
girls who otherwise couldn't afford them.
Simmons College was ranked 25 in a March 6 Boston Business Journal
list of the "Area's Largest Colleges & Universities." The list included educational institutions
throughout the Commonwealth.
March editions of
Hotel and Motel Management magazine and Boston Business
Journal announced the appointment of Simmons School of
Management alumna Denise Coll as president of Hotel Group,
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, North America.
Basketball coach Tony Price is quoted in the March
2 Boston
Globe describing the talent of new student basketball player Nikki
Cohen.
