Biology Professor Elizabeth Scott and her study about bacteria in "ready-to-eat" spinach were mentioned in the September 2007 issue of The Lancet, Britain's leading medical journal, in an article about fresh fruit and vegetables as vehicles of food-borne diseases.

In its annual wrap-up of public library projects and academic facilities, the December 2007 Library Journal included the Beatley Library among the projects providing "handsome support to our educational infrastructure."

Simmons School of Social Work Alumna Kathy Lopes '05SW was praised in a Jan. 17 Washington Post editorial for her efforts to call police and child welfare workers' attention to the suspected abuse of four children, who were later discovered dead in their home. A social worker for the charter school where one of the children was a student, Lopes made the calls after the child missed classes for more than a month.

The speakers of this year's Simmons School of Management Leadership Conference (including entertainer Gloria Estefan and paleoanthropologist Louise Leakey) were announced in a variety of media outlets, including the Jan. 14 Boston Globe "Names" column, CentreDaily.com (State College, PA), Investors.com (Investors Business Daily online) and Yahoo!Finance , as well as Gloria Estefan's official website.

Nutrition Professor Teresa Fung was interviewed in a Dec. 15 Family Practice News article about her recent study on the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. Her findings show that women who follow the DASH diet, heavy in fruits and vegetables, had a significant risk reduction of heart disease and stroke.

A feature story on artist Chantal Zakari in Art Papers magazine's December 2007 issue mentioned The Trustman Art Gallery's exhibit of Zakari's work, "Transgress" and the gallery's subsequent "Spinning Straw into Gold" art series. Art Papers is a bimonthly national publication featuring contemporary art and culture.

Alumnae Professor of English Afaa Michael Weaver was mentioned in a Jan. 11 SouthCoastToday.com (New Bedford Standard Times online) article about John Landry, poet laureate of New Bedford. Landry listed Weaver's The Plum Flower Dance among the books of poetry he is reading, and called Weaver's works "incredible."

Sociology Professor Steve London was interviewed in a Jan. 18 Patriot Ledger article about presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama being compared to John F. Kennedy and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.  London, who joined King's civil rights crusade in Chicago in 1966, said he finds King more charismatic than Obama.

President Susan Scrimshaw's father, Nevin Scrimshaw, was featured in the Jan. 28 Boston Globe and the Jan. 18 MIT News in honor of his 90th birthday. The articles described Scrimshaw's global contributions to the nutrition field, and his daughter's position as Simmons's president.
