An editorial column by Zachary Abuza, chair and professor of political science and international
relations, about Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her attempts to thwart that
country's terrorist activity, appeared in the Nov. 5 Wall Street
Journal. Abuza suggested that President Arroyo come up with a comprehensive peace plan with the
country's two homegrown, insurgent liberation groups.
Biology Professor Liz Scott, co-director of the Center
for Hygiene and Health in the Home and Community at Simmons, was widely quoted in the November edition
of Health magazine in an article about the "germiest places" one
can encounter during an average day.
Simmons's anonymous $1 million gift
was featured in the Nov. 5 Chronicle of Higher Education's listing
of gifts and bequests.

U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken discusses how he met his future wife, Franni, at a Simmons-Harvard mixer
during his first week of college.
Laura Prieto, associate professor of history and women's studies, was widely
quoted in an Oct. 29 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article about the
role of Halloween costumes in expressing personality traits. She said that one's choice of costume can
represent a part of the self that is usually submerged.
Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science
Professor Margaret Bush was quoted in a Nov. 7 Boston Globe
article about the Boston Public Library's branch libraries. She said Boston's branches have less staffing
and community connections than those of other metropolitan libraries.
