Blake-Beard was interviewed on the NBC Sunday Today
show July 15, in a segment focusing on companies with strong
networking programs for women. She spoke about the important role networking plays in helping women advance
their careers and salaries.
On June 26, The BCN (BreastCancer.Net) News ran a summary of Associate Nutrition
Professor
Teresa Fung'srecent work on
"dietary patterns, the Alternate Healthy Eating Index and, plasma sex hormone concentrations in
postmenopausal women," which was published in the August issue of the
International Journal of Cancer. The
BCN News is a daily enewsletter providing nearly 20,000 subscribers
with breaking news on breast cancer research and treatment. Fung also was quoted in a July 10
WebMD article, where she commented on a new study linking breast
cancer risk with a diet rich in sweets and meat.
An article about Simmons's $1.5 million
gift from the Barbara Lee Family Foundation to encourage
undergrads to pursue political careers ran in the June 24 Boston
Sunday Globe. The article quoted Leanne
Doherty, internship program director and assistant professor of
political science and international relations, and recent graduate Natalie Kaufman '07, who participated in
the program and is now aide to State Rep. Cory Atkins. The endowment also was mentioned in the June 16
Philanthropy News Digest, the June 18 edition of
Women's eNews, and the June 8 issues of the
Boston Business Journal, and Boston Now.
The School of Management students' visit to Zayed University in
Dubai (United Arab Emirates) was featured in AME Info, a business resource website for the Middle East, on
June 3. The article, which mentioned professors Lynda Moore and
Vipin Gupta, also included a photo of them and their students with
the president of the Dubai and UAE Business Women Council.
Zach Abuza, associate professor of
international relations has been featured in media around the world in recent weeks. He was
interviewed on National Public Radio's All Things Considered program
July 4 to discuss terrorism in Southeast Asia. His op-ed, "Heading South," about Thailand's attempts to
suppress its Muslim insurgency, was published in the June 19 Wall Street
Journal, and he was quoted in a June 17 New York Times
article about Indonesian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiah's reduction in large-scale attacks. Abuza was
interviewed in a June 15 China Post article about concerns that Thailand's increasingly violent insurgency is
linked to international extremists. (The China Post is Taiwan's leading English-language newspaper.) He wrote
an op-ed for the June 14 issue of the Sydney Morning Herald, about
the arrest of Jemaah Islamiah head Abu Dujana. And he was interviewed in a June 7
Fresno Bee (Calif.) article about an alleged plot by Hmong leaders
to overthrow Laos' government.
School of Health Sciences Associate Dean
Judy
Beal was quoted in a July 9 Boston Globe article about the
influx of mid-career healthcare professionals. Beal, who also is the secretary of the Mass. Association of
Colleges of Nursing, discussed the popularity of second-degree academic programs in nursing for professionals
who already have a college degree.
John Lowe, associate professor of
health care administration was interviewed
on the Lisa Birnbach Show June 20 to discuss health care costs and
the price of efficiency. The program is a three-hour talk show on the national women's radio network
Greenstone Media. Lowe also was quoted in a May 25 Birmingham
Business Journal (Alabama) article about growing competition between Birmingham's health care
providers and its effect on suburban residents.
Theresa Perry, professor of
education and
Africana studies,
was quoted in a June 22 Boston Globe article about Carol R. Johnson,
the next superintendent of the Boston Public Schools. Perry discussed her positive impressions of Johnson,
particularly her goal to close the achievement gap between black and Latino students and their white and
Asian peers.
Nina
Senatore, education
was interviewed in a May 17 Women'sWall Street.com article on summer
vacations. She said that children's memories of a trip are often much simpler moments and activities than
those that their parents expect will have the largest impact.
School of Social Work Dean Stefan
Krug was quoted in the June issue of University Business
magazine in an article titled "Doing Good and Doing Well." Krug commented on the increase of
social work students who are mid-life career changers wanting to make a difference.
A July 9 Boston Globe article about the Boston nonprofit Strong
Women, Strong Girls included a quote by senior Katherine Centrella,
who volunteers for the organization's Simmons College chapter.
Bob Coulam, research professor in
Health Care Administration was
referenced in a June 1 Times Argus (Barre, Vt.) editorial about
study findings on the Bush administration's use of interrogation techniques since the Sept. 11 attacks.
Coulam was one of the specialists commissioned by the Intelligence Science Board to advise the intelligence
agencies.
A 2002 Simmons School of Management survey on mentorship was
referenced in a June 4 New York Post article providing workplace
tips to new college graduates. The article said that having a mentor is an asset for professional
development, and that SOM survey results show that women with mentors reported a higher promotion rate.
