President Susan Scrimshaw wrote an op-ed in the April 22 Boston Sunday Globe. In the editorial titled "The Violence Virus," Scrimshaw states that urban shootings should be approached as a preventable public health epidemic. She also was featured in an executive profile in the Boston Business Journal's April 23 issue. The profile includes background on Scrimshaw's academic career, her anthropological and health care experience, and her goals and aspirations in leading Simmons College.

Zach Abuza, associate professor of international relations was quoted in an April 13 USA Today article about the growing Muslim insurgency in southern Thailand. He said the death toll from political violence has increased exponentially in the past year.

Simmons School for Health Studies Dean Gerry Koocher was interviewed in the Boston Metro's "60 Seconds with…" Q&A column on April 18, in which he discussed the Virginia Tech shootings and ways the students' families and the college community will deal with their grief and loss. On April 19, he also was quoted in a Boston Globe article focusing on how colleges identify warning signs of mental illness in their students and what steps can be taken to protect the college community.

Education and Africana Studies Professor Theresa Perry appeared on WGBH-TV/Boston's Basic Black program April 12. The episode, titled "Rules of Engagement," focused on how educators can engage students of color in the learning process. Basic Black is Boston's longest running weekly television program devoted exclusively to African American themes.

Nina Senatore, assistant professor of education, was interviewed in an April 16 Boston Herald article about parents using American Sign Language as another method of communicating with their children. Senatore said that ASL, no longer used only for children who are hearing-impaired or have developmental delays, helps parents "come down" to their children's language level.

Simmons School of Management (SOM) Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands is quoted in an April 8 Boston Sunday Globe article on local eco-friendly colleges. Merrill-Sands, who was described in the article as a "longtime environmentalist," discussed the profitability and social responsibility of SOM's new green building.

NASW Focus, the monthly newsletter of the National Association of Social Workers Massachusetts chapter, featured an article about Stefan Krug's appointment as the Simmons School of Social Work dean.

The Simmons School of Health Sciences
nursing program's collaboration with Winchester Hospital was featured in an April 10 Boston Herald article. In the program, Simmons provides classes for certified assistants on site at the hospital, enabling them to become registered nurses. The article included a photo of Associate Dean of Nursing Judy Beal with several hospital students.
