A March 11 New York Times story about
Gregory Maguire, author of
Wicked (now a Broadway musical), mentions Maguire's connections to
Simmons College. It tells how Maguire received a
master's degree in
children's literature at Simmons, where he taught for eight years.
Simmons College students Darcel Hunt and
Brenna DeCotis were featured in a March 10
Boston Globe article about a group of college students who spent
their spring break doing community service in Roxbury, Mass., where they tutored city teens, meet with
community leaders and learned about the history of the neighborhood.
On March 8, news anchors for the WCVB-TV (ABC) Channel 5 show
"Chronicle" mentioned Simmons
College as the only remaining women's undergraduate college in Boston, as well as an institution that
has increased its enrollment in recent years while other once-single gender colleges have gone co-ed.
Zach Abuza, associate professor of
political science and
international relations, was interviewed on ABC Online's
Australia edition Feb. 23 about insurgencies in the Philippines. Abuza was in Australia to address the
National Security Australia conference in Sydney. He also was interviewed in the
Sydney Morning Herald Feb. 28 about Jemaah Islamiah, an Indonesian
terrorist group responsible for the 2002 Bali bomb attacks.
On March 14, WBZ-TV (CBS) Channel 4 News aired a story on School of
Management Associate Professor Cynthia
Ingols research on flexible work arrangements, based on the School of Management's recently
released survey on the subject.
History Lecturer Kate Larson,
author of a biography of Harriet Tubman, has been interviewed in several articles about Tubman. She was
quoted in a Feb. 28 Baltimore Sun article about an effort by
Tubman's descendants to garner more recognition for her work with the Underground Railroad. Larson also was
interviewed for Feb. 24 Gannett News Service article about efforts
being made to resurrect the Underground Railroad route through a highway project.
School of Health Sciences Dean
Gerry Koocher was interviewed in a
ScienceCareers.org article titled "A Hippocratic Oath for
Scientists?" The article discusses Koocher's work to develop an ethics manual for researchers.
Simmons College was mentioned in a Feb. 23
Boston Business Journal article about a surge in college
applications throughout the region. Simmons was described as having a "big increase," with a 17.3%
change from 2006 to 2007.
The Springfield Republican published an article by
Washington Week moderator Gwen
Ifill, Simmons Class of 1977, which she wrote in response to readers' questions about her career and
life. In her article, Ifill - a former Springfield, Mass., resident - mentions her Simmons
education.
