Finance & Scholarships

Tuition and fees for study abroad always vary from what you pay at Simmons. Prices are influenced by local economies, type of program, location, duration, cost of living, excursions, and more. For example, a flight to Australia is significantly higher than a flight to London, but the cost of living may be higher in London. Compare your current costs for life in Boston: tuition, fees, room, board and your personal estimate for books, entertainment.

If you are studying abroad for a semester or full-year, you will pay tuition and program fees directly to a program provider, not to Simmons. You will likely have to pay for your own airfare, some meals and personal expenses. Many programs have estimates of how much students have spent per semester (or summer) available on their website.

In addition, each student studying abroad for a semester, summer or full-year, doing an international internship, research or independent study for academic credit will be charged a $400.00 administrative fee.  This fee covers the myriad services provided to students from multiple offices on campus.  Simmons values the study abroad experience and supports students as they prepare for their time abroad, remains available to answer questions and concerns while they are abroad and provides re-entry and transfer credit assistance upon their return.

Talk with your Financial Aid Officer

They will help you determine what sources of aid you will be able to receive while studying abroad. Students can use any aid that is coming from the federal government, the state, or private lending institutions. Note that federal aid includes the Stafford Loan, Perkins Loan, Parent PLUS Loan, Pell Grant, SEOG Grant, and TEACH Grant. To find out who your financial aid counselor is, visit their web page.

Both external and internal scholarships can be used for studying abroad. Please be aware that most Simmons merit scholarships and Simmons grants may not be used towards an external study abroad program. There are, however, a select number of scholarships designated for students studying abroad. Students have to apply to be considered for these study abroad scholarships. Deadlines for study abroad scholarship applications are March 15 and October 15.
