The list of students who are waiting for a space to open in a course section for a given term. Waitlists are active from the time registration for a term begins until just before the beginning of the term.

Section status "open":
There are spaces available in this course.

Section status "closed":
There are no spaces available in this course, and there are no waitlisted students for the course.

Section status "waitlisted":
There are no spaces available in the course, and a waitlist has started for students interested in registering for the course, should a space become available. If there are "available seats" listed, those spaces will be offered to the first students on the waitlist (see more about how waitlists operate below).

During Registration

Course sections are open until the number of students registered reaches the capacity. The capacity is determined by the department offering the course. When the course section closes, students can begin placing themselves on the waitlist for the course section. On AARC, instead of selecting "Register" as your registration action, select "Waitlist."

Before the Term Begins

If spaces in a course section become available, an automated system begins permitting the students on the waitlist to register. The student at the top of the waitlist will receive an email at her/his Simmons email account and will be given 72 hours from the time the email is sent to accept the space. This email will contain the course information as well as the expiration time of the permission period. If the student does not accept, the system will drop that student from the waitlist. The system will then email the next student on the waitlist.

For Students

If you are waitlisted for a course, be sure to check your Simmons email account frequently, as you will only have 72 hours to accept a space if it is offered to you. If for some reason you have trouble accepting a space in a course, you must call the Registrar's Office at 617-521-2111 or email If you are dropped from the waitlist because your time has expired, you can log into AARC and waitlist yourself for the course again. This will place you at the bottom of the waitlist.

Note: You cannot be waitlisted *and* registered for two different sections of the same course. For example, if you waitlist yourself for SW 577 01 and then register for SW 577 02, you will be dropped from the waitlist for SW 577 01.

For Faculty

The easiest way to determine if there is space vs. a waitlist for a course you are teaching is to access your course roster on AARC. Waitlisted students appear at the bottom of the roster. Keep in mind that the system will continuously send emails to students, so you may want to wait until the open spots are filled before permitting additional students into the course. Once your course is closed and the waitlist system becomes active, be sure to frequently check your roster as the system allows registration for waitlisted students if space allows. Enrollment beyond the capacity of the course is at your discretion.
