Tips for riding in the city

Always wear a helmet. Learn, use, and obey traffic signals.
Bicyclists must obey the same traffic laws as motor vehicles.
If you ride at night, make sure you have reflectors and lights on your bike.
Give pedestrians the right of way.
Always ride defensively, watch out for cars and car doors opening.
Do not weave through traffic. Slow down at intersections, and always look before crossing.
Keep your bike maintained.
When you are not riding your bike, remember to lock it. Heavy-duty U locks are recommended for securing all bikes. At night, it is recommended to wear reflective clothing, so that you are more visible.

Register your bike through the National Bike Registry, to keep your investment safe. Since 1984, the National Bike Registry (NBR®) has been working with law enforcement to return stolen bikes to their rightful owners.
