Erin filled us in on what it's like rowing crew at Simmons!
What are you studying?
I'm studying biochemistry. I started out as a nursing major at Simmons, but decided second semester of my first year that I wanted a major that was more focused on research. I've always loved and gravitated towards science and really enjoyed my general biology and chemistry courses my first semester. I realized that I wanted to delve further into those subjects and learn as much about them as possible.
What's your favorite class you've taken so far?
My first year seminar course: Gender, Race and Justice. I wasn't sure what to expect from this class, but it really changed my whole perception of society. I believe I'm a more open, accepting and understanding person after taking that course. I know that I wouldn't have had the same experience if I didn't attend a liberal arts college — and I'm grateful that Simmons gave me the opportunity to take a course that is not within the realm of biochemistry.
What sport do you play?
I'm on the varsity crew team. I'm usually in 3 seat in the first varsity 8.
How do you balance being a student athlete?
Honestly, it’s row, eat, study, sleep, repeat. I make sure that every minute of every day I'm being productive. I usually try to complete my homework assignments 2-3 days in advance in order to have time for second workouts or regattas on the weekend.
What's your favorite crew moment?
Head of the Charles Regatta last fall. My boat exceeded all expectations, placing in the top 50% and earning a guaranteed spot for this fall. It was such an amazing experience racing amongst some of the world’s greatest rowers. My boat gave it our all during that race and it was a very proud moment for us, our team and our coach. I still hang the pictures on my wall taken after that race because it was such an unbelievably happy day. The magic of the Head of the Charles Regatta was so alive that year — I can’t wait to race again this year.
What's your favorite part about rowing crew?
The community. I've made some of my closest friends on the crew team because we share a love for the sport, we're all very dedicated to the team and we're all determined to do our best at everything that we do.
I enjoy surrounding myself with people who are willing to wake up at 5 a.m. and give 100% every single morning. It's also nice to have academic support from my team. There are plenty of upperclassmen who have taken my courses before and are more than happy to help me and my teammates with our academics. Plus, with such a large team, I am guaranteed to never have to eat dinner alone in the dining hall because I always see at least one teammate urging me to join them.
Who is your sports idol?
Missy Franklin. She's sweet, bubbly and modest. She swims for the right reason, which is for the pure love of the sport. It's inspiring to me that she can go through all of that hard training and still maintain her love for swimming. Her awesome work ethic and optimism really inspires me.
