Emily Sours '17 Finds Inspiration in Art

February 19, 2015

Emily Sours

Emily works as an art installer at the Trustman Gallery at Simmons.

What's your major at Simmons?

Arts administration.

What drew you to your major?

I love art and I want to work with it for the rest of my life. I want to find artists that are fresh and new, and promote their artwork for the rest of the world to see. I want to be inspired by the people I work with and inspire them in return.

What's your favorite thing about your program?

The professors that I am fortunate enough to work with. Every professor in the art department is incredibly knowledgeable -- and they genuinely care about their students. They've pushed me to become someone I never thought I could be. I'm so thankful to them. The art department is a small, tight-knit community and I love getting to know all the people who make it wonderful.

What's it like being an installer at the art gallery? What do you do?

I assist Professor Bridget Lynch in the Trustman Art Gallery with the installations and de-installations of artwork of various mediums. I started working in the Trustman during my second semester of my first year at Simmons and have been in love with it ever since. Professor Lynch allows students to give input on the shows and trusts us to handle some very amazing art. I enjoy working in the gallery because I learn how to efficiently showcase the artist’s work, something that I would like to do for a living. I admire the intimate space the gallery provides to show off all the pieces of art that we install. The art is always different and intriguing -- I just love it.

What's your favorite part of being an art installer?

Getting to work with the artists. When I go to large institutions, like the Museum of Fine Arts, most of the time the artists have been dead for a centuries. Working in the gallery allows me to connect with artists and ask them questions about their work. I like getting to the stories behind their art.

If you could have dinner with 3 artists (living or dead) who would they be and why?

I'd like to eat dinner with Michelangelo because of the inspiring and timeless masterpieces he created in his lifetime. I would also like to meet Kiki Smith, because I think we need more women artists like her in the world. Finally, I would like to eat dinner with Vik Muniz because he can create something beautiful out of something once ugly and useless.

What's your dream job?

To be the director of an art gallery. I want to go out into the world and find artists who have amazing work and are waiting to be found. I want to be the one to showcase their art for the public and surround myself with the beauty of their lives.

Fill in the blank: I love Simmons because...

...of the people I've met. Whether they are faculty, friends, or colleagues, I've met some amazing people at Simmons. Friends I will have for life.
