Zara Ali, '15, Finds Amazing Internship Opportunity

October 30, 2014

Zara Ali

Zara spent her summer interning at the Bank of Tokyo in its New York City office.

What are you studying?

Economics and finance!

Where was your internship? What did you do?

I interned at the third largest bank in the world, the Bank of Tokyo, in its New York City office. I was on the Commodities and Trade Finance team and worked with several international companies who were importing and/or exporting goods. I analyzed financial statements in different languages and presented the numbers to show if it would be a good deal to pursue or not.

What was the application process like for you?

The application process was unique for me. After researching on LinkedIn, I networked with a 2008 alumna, Katherine Hansell. After talking to her about her career path, she helped me get a first round interview. I was then called back for a second round and made the cut from 70 interviewees to the 18 interns!

What was the most rewarding part of your experience?

Having alumna Katherine Hansell as an advocate. Being a woman in a male dominated field we are always told we need to have women as allies. I never knew what this meant until I created a special relationship with Katherine. I was always able to turn to her for advice and mentorship. Having a little bit of Simmons even in the big city of New York was extremely rewarding and special to my experience.

What was a typical day like at your internship?

A typical day for me started around 8 a.m. I would check my emails and attend a couple meetings with my managers. Later in the day I would work on my long term projects for a bit and also do my day-to-day tasks. One daily task was to update commodity prices and explain the fluctuations that happened overnight. I would also meet about 1-2 people for coffee to learn about what they did and their career paths.

What's your dream job?

To become a global head of a division. I will be joining the Bank of Tokyo full time after graduation and hope to do well and move up within the organization.

Fill in the blank: I love Simmons because....

I'm always pushed to reach new heights and am constantly encouraged and supported in my endeavors.
