Marcela Jimenez, '15 Rocks the Vote

November 04, 2014

Marcela Jimenez

Don't forget to vote! Marcela interned for the Attorney General of Massachusetts candidate, Maura Healey.

What are you studying at Simmons?

I'm part of the 3+1 Economics and Public Policy program and I'm in the Honors Program.

What's your favorite thing about your program?

The rigorous curriculum. I enjoy being busy and feeling like I'm getting the most out of my education. I admit, the workload does become overwhelming at times. And when it does, my professors are always there to support and advise me.

What campaign are you working on? What type of work are you doing?

I'm currently interning for Maura Healey's campaign. I've been working on a variety of different voter contact activities and social media development projects. I've learned political writing, media messaging and grassroots organizing skills.

What was the application process like?

It was relatively simple. Campaigns are always looking for people to lend a hand. I sent my application to the intern director, along with a cover letter explaining why I wanted to work on a campaign for Maura Healy. It helped to have past experience working on Bill de Blasio and Marty Walsh's campaigns.

What's your favorite part of campaigning?

The grassroots work. I believe it's important to get information out there, not through the media but through person-to-person contact. It's a great feeling when people stop to talk to you and go from being a non-voter to a voter. By reaching out to more people, you are helping to increase voter turnout, which is important when trying to regain power for the people.

What are the top 5 reasons students should get out and vote?

  1. It's your right!
  2. It ensures that you're represented.
  3. Every vote counts -- meaning your vote DOES matter.
  4. Your vote can help shape the political agenda.
  5. Policies implemented now will affect your future.

What's your dream job?

I want to continue working with grassroots organizations and nonprofits that encourage people to see that they can make a difference in society. I'm especially interested in work that focuses on the importance of the environment. In a couple of years, I hope to begin work with the Yasuni tribes in Ecuador, and help push for policies that protect the Amazonian rainforest.

Fill in the blank: I love Simmons because...

It has presented me with so many opportunities. It's a place that constantly pushes you to be your best and to step out of your comfort zone.
