Graduate students from Simmons School of Nursing and Health Sciences and the School of Social Work and a medical student from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth recently participated in an innovative immersion program focused on inter-professional education and health care delivery.

For two weeks in January 2015, a Nursing, Nutrition, Physical Therapy, and Social Work graduate student from Simmons worked together out of the White River Junction VA Medical Center’s Home Based Primary Care. Students drove with VA professionals to deliver team-based care at the homes of some of the most fragile and vulnerable of veterans living in New Hampshire and Vermont. The program exposed students to health care in a rural setting and allowed them to work with and learn from students and professionals in different disciplines.

Farrell Frankel, a participant from the Nutrition program, reflected on the importance of being part of an inter-professional team, “I think the most valuable part of the experience was the time we spent with providers in different fields. Learning about other disciplines first-hand through observation opens the door to so many conversations that enhance the care of a patient.”

With the success of the pilot, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences and School of Social Work plan to expand this and other program that focus inter-professional education. Nancie Herbold, SNHS Associate Dean for Research and Innovation and Nutrition Chair, who led this pilot program, said, “This kind of inter-professional experience is the future of health care.”

This inter-professional education project, along with four other such initiatives was funded through the generosity of Alison Chase, a 1997 graduate of Simmons Master of Science in Nursing program.
