Johanna Georgilas

With a clinical background in nursing, Johanna Georgilas now focuses on improving health care with technology and data usage.

Johanna Georgilas has a passion for improving health care. Before coming to the Simmons Health Care MBA program (HCMBA), Johanna had already built on her clinical background in nursing, and was managing telehealth and training at Phillips Healthcare. Since starting graduate school, she also accepted a new job with broader responsibility as Senior Manager for the Clinical Quality Management team at athenahealth. Georgilas expects her education to help her in her career goal: have a significant impact to improve health care using technology.

Georgilas was eager to take the next step in her career, but unsure which graduate program would help her get there. Then, as an alum of the Simmons Nursing program she received an email about the HCMBA Program. She attended an info session and knew right away that the mix of healthcare and management made the program a perfect fit.

Throughout all of her courses, Georgilas has always found something she can apply to her work the very next day. She credits her Strategic Thinking and Analytical Decision Making course with her current career direction. It helped her gain self-awareness about her strategic thinking competencies -- preparing her for a position that combines people management and strategic thinking. Health Care IT reminded her why she loves technology and its application in healthcare.

So how does she manage a demanding career, part time graduate program and a family? Georgilas credits her supportive husband with overseeing many of their family responsibilities while she is in school, but she does miss cooking! Her advice for work/life integration is pretty straightforward:

“Put your head down, figure out your priorities for each area of your life, and make the tradeoffs you need to.”
